Ray Dennig has served as the scoreboard operator since 1960, when the scoreboard consisted of flip cards on the scorer’s table and the old red time clock. Ray owned the Campus Shell service station in Madison at the time and Fairleigh Dickinson Athletic Director Bob Shields was a customer. One day, Bob asked Ray if he would like the job, and he’s been doing it ever since.

Dennig has been working for Shell Oil Company for 37 years. He owns Lancers Shell in Livingston, named after the mascot of Livingston High School. At one time Ray had a good number of the school’s athletes working at his station.

Dennig raced motorcycles for 13 years in the American Motorcycle Association and was inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame.
He graduated from Irvington Tech where he played basketball. Dennig later played basketball for Panzer College in East Orange which later became part of Montclair State University.

For years, Dennig was active as a coach in youth sports such as basketball, baseball, and soccer.

He has three children: Laura, a math teacher at Chatham High School, Scott, who works in building trades, and Keith, who is the personnel director at Lancers Shell.
