From 1963-1966, Mitch Baumeister played men's lacrosse for the Jersey Devils. He was elected Co-Captain in 1965 and in 1966 he captained FDU's first division title winning team. Mitch was named the first FDU-Madison Athlete of the Year for the 1965-66 athletic season and was voted the team's Most Valuable Player. He was also the overall National Points Leader in 1966 with a single-season total of 79 points. His assist total was the third-highest in the country (39), while his goal tally was the fifth (40) most. Mitch finished his career with 128 points, which places him 14th on FDU's career scoring list. He scored seven goals against Dickinson College in 1965 for a then school record. Mitch finished his career for the Jersey Devils with records for single game assists (seven vs. Muhlenberg in 1966), season assists (39 in 1966 in 14 games), and season points (79 in 1966). He now sits 4th on the single-season all-time list for points and assists in a season.Â
In 1972, Mitch graduated from Seton Hall University School of Law. In 1978, Mitch received a graduate degree in International Law from NYU Law School. As a student at FDU in the early 1960's, Mitch began flying at Morristown Airport and has combined his lifelong skills as a pilot with those of a trial lawyer to become a nationally recognized aviation law specialist. A trial lawyer since 1972, Mitch has been engaged in civil trial practice, except for his appointment in the public sector as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Manhattan office in the 1970's. Besides chairing National BAR Association committees, lecturing and writing extensively in this field, Mitch teaches part-time as an adjunct professor of aviation law at Seton Hall University School of Law and has been a lead attorney in such recent court cases as the Pan Am explosion over , Scotland; the ValueJet crash into the Florida Everglades; the TWA 800 explosion off Long Island; and now the SwissAir 111 crash into the Atlantic Ocean off Nova Scotia, Canada.
