The 1981 Men's Lacrosse Team was a team of firsts at FDU.  The squad went 12-3, won the school's first MAC Championship in lacrosse and qualified for the school's first NCAA Tournament in lacrosse.  Led by captains Scott Somerville, Art Odwazny, and Wolf Gonzalez, the team started 8-0 and achieved the #9 ranking in the nation.

Somerville led the way with 57 goals and 15 assists while Jean Steffen added 50 goals and 14 assists.  Mike DiGiuseppe (30g, 13a), Wes O'Donnell (17g, 31a), and Luke Noll (13g, 20a) were other key contributors on offense.  Defensively, Bill Scioscia ranked third in the nation with a .675 save percentage and his 48 saves against Montclair State was a record for most single-game saves.

The '81 Devils played in first lacrosse game ever televised on ESPN against Western Maryland and along the way, FDU beat two Division I schools and one Division II school.  In the MAC Finals, the Devils knocked off Western Maryland by a score of 13-10 which prompted Head Coach Ted Bruning and Assistant Coach Don Alberti to say after the game, "This is what it is all about.  Winning this Championship is a classic example of the thrill of victory."
