Box Score Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (May 5) – On the opening day of the 2022 MAC Freedom Softball Championship Tournament, fifth-seeded FDU-Florham was edged by fourth-seeded Stevens, 7-6, in ten innings before game two against third-seeded King's College was halted due to darkness in the fifth inning.
At the time of game two being called, King's held a 9-4 lead. The game will not resume tomorrow due to the impending weather, but the MAC and King's College will reassess the remainder of the tournament on Friday.
Game One: Stevens 7, FDU 6 (10 Innings)
The opener was scoreless until Stevens put together four runs in the bottom of the fifth on three RBI singles. FDU answered in the top of the sixth with three runs on an RBI single up the middle by
Kacie Centineo (Waldwick, NJ) and a two run home run to left field by
Kristina Pelano (Howell, NJ).
After an RBI double in the bottom in the bottom of the sixth from Stevens, FDU took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh as with the bases loaded
Heather Priante (Howell, NJ) scored on a wild pitch and Centineo scored on an error. A. Delorme knotted the game up at 6-6 in the bottom of the seven for Stevens on an RBI double to left center sending the game to extra innings.
Both teams went quietly in the eighth and the ninth, but it was Stevens which scored the game winning run in the bottom of the tenth on an RBI double by J. Guerrero.
Rachel Reiter (Riverside, Calif.) went 3-for-5, while Pelano went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI for the Devils.
Ciara Hoffman (Freehold, NJ) pitched all nine innings but fell just short in a strong effort in the circle as she allowed four earned runs and struck out five on 166 pitches.
Game Two: Called Due to Darkness, King's 9, FDU 4 (Through 5 Innings)
King's jumped out to a 7-1 lead through two innings before
Morgan DeLoreto (Denville, NJ) launched a three run homer in the top of the fourth inning that plated
Colleen Conway (Amityville, NY) and Pelano. The Monarchs struck for two in the bottom of the fourth to extended their lead to 9-4 before the game was called due to darkness.
The rest of this game will not be finished tomorrow due to the impending weather. The MAC and host King's College will reassess the remainder of the tournament tomorrow with hopes of resuming before the weekend is over.
