Anthony Van Curen Named Defensive Coordinator

MADISON, N.J. (July 3, 2019) – Head Coach Brian Surace of the FDU-Florham football team has named Anthony Van Curen as the new Defensive Coordinator.

"We are very excited to have Anthony back at FDU as our Defensive Coordinator," explained Surace. "He did a tremendous job as our Defensive Line coach in 2014 and 2015 and then went on to Rutgers the last three seasons and each year got more responsibilities put on his plate to make him ready for this job. Having made many positive relationships his first time around at FDU, we are looking forward to how Anthony can raise the bar this time around."

Van Curen spent the last three seasons with Rutgers University, including the previous two as a Defensive Assistant. He worked closely with the inside and outside linebackers. In his first season at RU in 2016, Van Curen assisted in player development. This marks Van Curen's second stint with the Devils, as he was the Defensive Line Coach with the team from 2014-16.

He played collegiately at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. seeing time as a linebacker and long-snapper while also playing special teams. The Cardinals went 33-12 during his four seasons, including three ECAC Championships. During his senior season in 2011, St. John Fisher posted a 10-3 mark and qualified for the NCAA DIII Football Championship. The Cardinals picked up wins over Johns Hopkins University and Delaware Valley and advancing to the Quarterfinals where they ended the season ranked No. 11 in the D3Football.com final poll.

Off the field, Van Curen previously worked at the Prudential Center and the Devils Arena Entertainment as the Arena Conversions Manager. While at the Prudential Center, he worked on several high profile events including the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals, Super Bowl Media Day, the NBA and NHL Drafts in addition to Seton Hall basketball and New Jersey Devils home contests.

The Goshen, N.Y. native got his start coaching at his high school alma mater, John S. Burke Catholic. In working with both the linebackers and wide receivers, he assisted the team to just their second Section IX Title in school history. He holds the John S. Burke record for most tackles in a season (133) and career (301) and was chosen as to the First Team Section IX Defense and Third Team NYSSWA All-State Defense. Van Curen was a three-year starter as a linebacker and also started for three seasons on the baseball while serving as a team captain for both sports.
