Heineman Sets New Career Sacks Record in Football's Drubbing of Alvernia

MADISON, N.J. – Senior Matt Heineman set a new career-sacks record for the Devils as the Staten Island, N.Y. native recorded his 27th-career sack in Saturday's 52-3 routing of Alvernia University on Robert T. Shields Field to give FDU its first win in 2025.

DEVILS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Heineman finished the day with four tackles and his two sacks.
  • JC Henriquez and Ginika Ozurumba led all Devils defenders with eight tackles including one sack from Ozurumba.
  • Four FDU players finished with four tackles and four finished with three.
  • Quarterback Jake Sconza finished the day with 21 completions on 32 attempts, throwing for 256 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Senior Ethan Yak led all rushers with nine attempts, rushing for a net gain of 42 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Amir Robinson and Brandyn Shepherd each rushed for their first career touchdowns.
  • Senior Andrike Terry Jr. scored twice with two touchdown receptions.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Devils got on the board first in the first quarter as Sconza found a wide-open Terry Jr. down field for a 30-yard touchdown pass.
  • Alvernia answered with a field goal on its ensuing drive but that was all the Golden Wolves would muster against the FDU defense.
  • The Devils offense exploded for 28 points in the second quarter as a 10-play drive led a Robinson's first-career touchdown and FDU's second of the day.
  • Later in the quarter, an almost 4:00 drive set up Yak for his first score of the day as he used a one-yard rush to score FDU's third TD of the afternoon.
  • The Devils defense got in on the action just before the break as Mike Barzal blocked the Golden Wolves punt, recovered and ran it back four yards to put FDU up 28-3.
  • In the final 2:00, Sconza connected with Terry Jr. once again in the back right corner of the Alvernia endzone and sent the Devils to the locker room up 35-3.
  • After the break, the FDU offense cooled off slightly as the Devils managed just a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter off the foot of Ian Poole-Morgan
  • In the fourth, FDU used a 6:00 drive that featured five Matthew Yascko runs to help set up Shepherd, an offensive lineman, for a two-yard touchdown rush.
  • With the Devils up by 42 points, FDU tacked on one more TD as Yak scored for the second time on the day to seal the 52-3 win.
GAME NOTES
  • Heineman is now FDU's all-time leader in sacks with 27.
  • FDU's 52 points were the Devils most since defeating Alvernia 84-56 back in 2019.
  • This was the sixth time this season FDU connected on exactly two receiving touchdowns.
  • This was the second game this season the Devils defense recorded four sacks and the first time with multiple interceptions as Gio White and Anthony Collier each came away with one.
  • FDU's eight pass breakups were the most pass break ups by the defense all season with Navir Gandy leading the way with two.
FDU finishes the season with a 1-9 overall record and 1-8 in MAC play.
