Softball Drops Two Games at No. 18 Kean

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UNION, N.J. (March 23, 2017) - The FDU softball team dropped a doubleheader to No. 18 Kean University Thursday.

FDU dropped to 3-11, and Kean improved to 13-1.

GAME 1: No. 18 Kean 10, FDU 2 (5 innings)

The host Cougars did most of the damage in the first three innings, scoring nine runs. The big frame was the third, as Kean scored five runs in the inning. The Devils, who had not gotten a hit over the first three, got their first hit in the fourth as freshman Gabby Young led off with a single.

Young stole second and scored on a run-scoring groundout by senior Paige Lillie. After the Devils tallied an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but Kean would add the final tally in the home half to end the game after five frames.

Junior Audrie Thomas tossed 3 1/3 innings of relief, striking out one batter.

GAME 2: No. 18 Kean 4, FDU 3

Once again, the Cougars drew first blood, scoring three times in their first at bat. The big hit was a three-run home run by senior Dana Knapp. After surrendering two hits in the first, freshman Kaylee Fish settled down, allowing two baserunners over the next three innings.

Kean starter Taryn DiGiacomo carried a perfect game into the fifth, but it was broken up with a two-out single by sophomore Courtney Rhode. In the home fifth, the Cougars strung together three consecutive hits to push a run across.

The Devils threatened in the top of the seventh, as freshman Tara Morash led off with a single and Lillie walked, putting the tying run on deck. After the next two hitters made outs, Rhode belted an RBI double to right field. Junior Rebecca DeCarlo was up next and hit a two-run double that glanced off the centerfielder's glove. But the next flied to left to end the game.

Fish went five innings, giving four runs and four hits while allowing four walks.

FDU will have its home opener Sunday, taking on Wilkes at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader.
