Devils Finish 4-4 on Florida Spring Break Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – After picking up four wins on their Florida Spring Break Trip, the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham softball team will return to Madison with a 4-4 record.

The Devils' offense was electric all week and they scored a combined total of 59 runs over the eight-game stretch. In all but the final game of the trip, the Devils had at least one run cross the plate.

Sunday, March 13 – GAME 1
FDU-Florham 10 (1-0), Rutgers-Newark 1 (1-4)

Senior pitcher Sydney Worek stepped onto the mound for the first time in 2016 and delivered a dominant performance, striking out nine batters and only surrendering four hits in the Devils 10-1 win over Rutgers-Newark.  
 
In the first inning of play, she fanned three of the Scarlet Raiders' batters.
 
The Devils offense caught fire right away in the bottom half of the first. Marlena Bevilacqua led things off with a triple and came around to score on a Rebecca DeCarlo RBI single. Following a Nikki Caruso walk and a Wynne McCann single to left field, Taylor Torre drew a base on balls and DeCarlo came in to score. FDU-Florham plated one more run to grab an early 3-0 lead.
 
Worek took the mound in the second and once again struck out three of the batters for the Scarlet Raiders. However, in the third, Rutgers-Newark finally got to Worek and Kelly Yusko sent the ball over the fence to cut the deficit to two runs.
 
Once Worek struck out the side in the top half of the fourth, the Devils came to bat and after Jacquelyn Herrington doubled, Bevilacqua notched a single and Herrington scored on an error. With two runners on base for the Devils, McCann stepped up and rifled a two-RBI single. With a five-run lead, the Devils added one final run on a Paige Lillie RBI single.
 
McCann led the way for the Devils at the plate, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Meanwhile, five other batters for the Devils recorded two or more hits. 
 
Sunday, March 13 – GAME 2
FDU-Florham 1 (1-1), Plymouth State University 4 (3-2)
W: Allison Moylan (1-0), L: Brittany Funicelli (0-1)

Despite narrowly edging out Plymouth State in hits in the game, the Devils were unable to manufacture more than one run and ultimately fell to the Panthers 3-1.
 
The Devils found themselves down 2-0 after the Panthers plated two early runs.
 
In the bottom half of the second, Courtney Rohde reached base safely on a fielder's choice and advanced to second following a Herrington single. Bevilacqua then came up and notched an RBI single, scoring Rohde.
 
FDU-Florham loaded the bases up in the inning with two outs, but the Panthers escaped the jam.
 
After a couple of scoreless innings from both teams, the Panthers had something brewing in the top half of the fifth after Autumn Beyor singled to lead things off. Two fielding errors by the Devils allowed the Panthers to plate one more run in the game and they eventually went on to grab the 3-1 victory.
 
Monday, March 14 – GAME 1
FDU-Florham 21 (2-1), Lasell College 5 (0-3) (5 Innings)

The Devils strung together 23 hits and scored a jaw-dropping 21 runs in a 21-5 win over the Lasell College Lasers.
 
Bevilacqua could not be stopped at the plate and provided a tremendous spark as the leadoff hitter, setting the tone early for the Devils and batting 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI in the win.
 
Her first hit of the day was a single to kick off the game and by using her speed she managed to advance to second base safely on the play. After stealing third, she scored on a Caruso sacrifice fly to center.
 
The Devils went on to score six more runs over the course of the next three innings. It was in the top half of the fifth that the Devils' offense truly caught fire, erupting for an astonishing 14 runs. FDU-Florham tallied four singles, four doubles, one triple and two homers in the inning. Michelle Mangini recorded two hits in the fifth, including an RBI triple.
 
Torre capped off the inning with a two-run home run to give the Devils a 21-2 lead. The Lasers tacked on three runs in the bottom half of the fifth, but the lead was insurmountable and the Devils came out victorious.
 
Monday, March 14 – GAME 2
FDU-Florham 21 (3-1), Stevenson University 5 (1-5)
W: Sydney Worek (2-0), L: Brooke Steinbach (0-3)

Six different batters for the Devils recorded a multi-hit game in the team's 7-6 victory over the Stevenson University Mustangs.
 
The Devils opened up the contest with four runs in the first inning. Two of the runs came on a Rohde double down the right field line.
 
With two outs in the top half of the second, DeCarlo and Caruso hit back-to-back home runs to extend the Devils' lead to six runs.
 
The Mustangs came charging right back though and a Kristen Mueller grand slam made it a one-run game.
 
It remained a one-run game until the bottom half of the sixth, when Laura Welch knocked in a run for Stevenson on an RBI single to center.
 
In the seventh, the Devils got two runners on and Mangini came through with an RBI single to left center to give FDU-Florham a one-run advantage. The Mustangs managed to get two runners on in the final half inning of play, but the Devils successfully worked out of the jam and captured the 7-6 win.
 
Wednesday, March 16 – GAME 1
FDU-Florham 7 (3-2), Wheaton College (Mass.) 8 (4-4)
W: Shelbi Thomas (1-0), L: Sydney Worek (2-1)

After claiming back-to-back wins in Florida, the Devils dropped a game to the Wheaton College Lions 8-7.
 
Despite falling behind 2-0 in the third inning, the Devils bounced right back and Caruso knotted the game up with a two-RBI single to right field. Caruso went 3-for-4 in the game with three RBIs and a run scored.
 
The following inning, the Devils continued to hit the ball well and tacked on three more runs.
 
FDU-Florham was able to hold onto its three-run lead up until the sixth inning, when the Lions came roaring back and plated six runs to grab a 8-5 advantage.
 
The Devils came up to hit in the bottom half of the seventh and Bevilacqua reached base safely on an error by the Lions. After stealing third, she came in to score once Caruso notched an RBI single into right center.
 
With Caruso sitting on first base with one out, McCann knocked the ball into the outfield for an RBI single to cut the deficit to one, but she was thrown out trying to advance to second base on the play. The Lions managed to record the final out of the game and seal the 8-7 victory over FDU-Florham.
 
Wednesday, March 16 – GAME 2
FDU-Florham 1 (3-3), Amherst College 5 (7-1)
W: Lorena Ukanw (1-0), L: Brittany Funicelli (0-2)

The Devils were unable to overcome an early 4-0 deficit and ultimately fell to Amherst College 5-1.
 
FDU-Florham was limited to just five hits in the game, but Bevilacqua managed to notch a pair of singles.
 
After four innings of play, the Devils found themselves down by four, but in the top half of the fifth, their bats got in rhythm. Herrington led off the inning with a single and Tartaglia came in to pinch run for her. Following a Bevilacqua single, Caruso singled and Tartaglia came around to score the Devils' lone run of the game.
 
Amherst added one more run in the bottom half of the sixth and went on to grab the 5-1 win over the Devils.
 
Thursday, March 17 – GAME 1
FDU-Florham 12 (4-3), Westfield State University 4 (0-7)
W: Audrie Thomas (2-0), L: Julia Sullivan (0-3)

The Devils totaled 14 hits and defeated Westfield State University 12-4.
 
Six batters for the Devils tallied two or more hits in the win, including a 3-for-3 game at the plate by Torre.
 
Westfield State jumped on the board early with four runs in the first two innings. However, the Devils responded in the bottom half of the second with a pair of runs to cut the deficit to two.
 
The Devils did most of their work in the third inning, plating eight runs. FDU-Florham was able to score four runs to tie the game up without Westfield State recording a single out.
 
After grabbing a one-run lead, Bevilacqua shot an RBI double in to left center and she was brought in to score on a DeCarlo two-RBI single down the right field line.
 
Caruso then came up and hit an RBI double into right field to put another run on the board for FDU-Florham.
 
Before the game was over, the Devils added two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth and they claimed the 12-4 victory.
 
Thursday, March 17 – GAME 2
FDU-Florham 0 (4-4), Plattsburgh State University 3 (3-6)
 
The Devils closed out the Spring Break Trip with a 3-0 loss to Plattsburgh State University.
