Devils Tournament Run Ends with 10-8 Loss to Cougars

Box Score DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The FDU-Florham softball team was not able to hold on to their four-run lead and fell 10-8 to Misericordia University at the Freedom Conference Tournament on Saturday morning.

The Devils (17-16) led 8-4 after two innings of play but were unable to score again, as the Cougars (24-15) rallied over the next four frames to earn the victory.

Three Devils totaled three-hit games in the loss, led by Nikki Caruso (Madison, N.J./Madison) who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

In the bottom of the first, trailing 1-0, the Devils offense went to work. Sophomore Wynne McCann (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) launched a solo homer, Brittni Wurst (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) knocked in Caruso with a single and then scored on a fielder's choice.

Misericordia responded with three runs in the top of the second inning and took a 4-3 lead. FDU-Florham countered with a monster home half of the second.

With two on, Caruso doubled to right centerfield, which plated two runs and put the Devils back in front. Caruso then scored on an error. FDU-Florham netted another run off of a Misericordia error and then sophomore Jaclyn Herrington (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) doubled in a run, which capped a five-run, five-hit inning for the Devils. Unfortunately, that would conclude the scoring for the Devils.

Trailing 8-4, the Cougars went to work with a run in the third and three in the fourth to tie the game at 8-8. Misericordia sophomore first baseman Melissa Parker delivered the game-winning blow with a solo home run to right centerfield. The Cougars added one on more with a solo blast in the seventh and claimed the victory.

Wurst and McCann combined to go 6-for-8 with three RBI and four runs in the loss. The Devils totaled 11 hits in the contest, nine of which came courtesy of Wurst, McCann and Caruso.

Megan Hardy and Kristi Seiler paced the Cougars attack with three hits apiece.

The loss eliminates the Devils from the tournament, while the Cougars advanced to take on King's College on Saturday.
