Box Score 2 MADISON, N.J. – After dropping the first game of the doubleheader, the FDU-Florham Devils defeated Kean University in game two to earn a split on Sunday afternoon at McManus Field. The Devils dropped the front end of the doubleheader 6-1, before claiming the second game 11-8.
With the split the Devils are now 13-8 on the season, while the Cougars currently sit at 19-5 on the campaign.
The Cougars used a six-run top of the fifth inning to claim game one, while the Devils bats were in full force in game two, led by senior catcher
Sarah Lima's (Stanfordville, N.Y./Pine Plains) two home runs. Lima went 3-for-4 in the second game with three RBI and three runs scored.
Game One:The Devils and Cougars played three innings of scoreless softball, as FDU-Florham starter
Sydney Worek (Bordentown, N.J./Florence Township) and Kean right-hander
Courtney Yard matched each other pitch-for-pitch.
In the home half of the fourth inning, the Devils threatened as sophomore center fielder
Jenna Appello (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) led off with a single and sophomore catcher
Wynne McCann (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) followed with a walk. However, Yard struck out the next three hitters in order to escape the jam.
The Cougars broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI-single by
Tiffany Varriello. Freshman
Amanda Berezny followed with a two-run homer, which gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Kean tacked on three more runs in the inning to stake a 6-0 lead. FDU-Florham senior shortstop
Maggie Murphy (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) got the Devils on the board with a solo blast in the bottom of the fifth but that would be all the scoring for the home team, as they fell 6-1.
Game Two:FDU-Florham wasted no time breaking into the scoring column in game two. Lima stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first and crushed her first homer of the day over the left field fence, which gave the Devils a 1-0 lead through one.
The Cougars fought back with four runs in the second inning, three of which came courtesy of a three-run homer by Kean catcher
Jill Martin. The Devils remained determined to earn the series split and battled back in the third frame. Leadoff hitter
Brittni Wurst (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) drove in a run with an RBI-single and then scored on a throwing error by Kean pitcher
Rebecca Rotola.
Lima stepped in and launched her second homer of the game, this one a two-run bomb to right center field, which put the Devils back on top 5-4. The pair of home runs were the senior's first two blasts of the season.
The Devils proceeded to break the game open in the fourth inning. Wurst hammered a two-run single off of the Kean third baseman's glove and then scored on sophomore
Nikki Caruso's (Madison, N.J./Madison) RBI-single. After a single by Lima, Appello crushed a three-run blast, which provided FDU-Florham with an 11-4 advantage.

Kelly Moorehead smacked a grand slam in the top of the of the fifth, but that concluded the scoring for the day as the Devils secured an 11-8 win. In the victory, Devils freshman starter
Amanda Finn (Massapequa, N.Y./Saint Dominic) improved to 6-2 on the season.
Next up for the Devils:FDU-Florham heads to Patchogue, N.Y. this Wednesday, April 9
th to take on St. Joseph's College (LI) in a doubleheader, with first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
