Box Score 2 STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The FDU-Florham softball team earned a split with College of Staten Island (18-15) on Saturday afternoon at the CSI Softball Complex.
The Devils (17-14) dropped game one 6-5 but rallied to earn the game two victory 7-6 as they wrap up regular-season play.
Game OneThe Devils jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks to an RBI-single by senior
Sarah Lima (Stanfordville, N.Y./Pine Plains) but Dolphins freshman
Jacqueline Cautela answered with a solo blast in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1-1.
In the home half of the second, Cautela tripled in another run and Staten Island led 3-1 after two innings of play. Trailing 4-2, senior
Toni-ann Canova (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) laced a double and then scored on a single by junior first baseman
Christina Legotti (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage).
With two on in the top of the sixth, sophomore
Nikki Caruso (Madison, N.J./Madison) cleared the bases with a fly ball to right field that was misplayed by the Dolphins. The error resulted in a 5-4 lead for FDU-Florham.
Unfortunately, the Devils were unable to hold the lead and in the bottom of the seventh, Staten Island sophomore
Chyanne Gilliam plated the go ahead runs with a walk-off single.
Senior left fielder
Brittni Wurst (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) led the Devils in game one and went 2-for-3 with three runs scored in the loss.
Game TwoFDU-Florham's offense was in full gear in the second game of the doubleheader. In the top of the second inning, Legotti, Caruso, and Lima plated four runs with singles, which gave the Devils a 4-0 lead.
In the fourth, the Devils enhanced their lead thanks to an error by the Dolphins and a run-scoring double by sophomore
Wynne McCann (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area). However, the Dolphins would rally back and make a game of it.
Trailing 7-0, Staten Island totaled six runs on five hits in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to one but FDU-Florham starter
Amanda Finn (Massapequa, N.Y./Saint Dominic) settled in and pitched around a lead-off single in the seventh to preserve the victory for the Devils.
Lima pacd the Devils attack in game two by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run, while McCann added two hits and an RBI in the win.
