Box Score 2 EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The FDU-Florham Devils softball team split a doubleheader with Freedom Conference foe Wilkes University (5-21, 2-10 Freedom) on Sunday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex. The Devils (16-11, 9-3 Freedom) took the first game 11-3 before dropping game two 14-6.
Game One:The Devils wasted no time putting runs on the board as they crossed the plate five times in the top of the first inning.
Brittni Wurst (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) jetted home on a passed ball for the first run. Senior Toni-Ann Canova (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) knocked in two with an RBI-single and senior third baseman
Kristie Crilley (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) plated one more with a single up the middle.
The Lady Colonels answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 5-3. In the top of the second inning, senior
Sarah Lima (Stanfordville, N.Y./Pine Plains) knocked a single up the middle, which scored Wurst and gave the Devils a 6-3 lead. FDU-Florham tacked on five more, highlighted by
Nikki Caruso's (Madison, N.J./Madison) three-run homer in the fifth inning, which put the game out of reach.
Freshman right-hander
Amanda Finn (Massapequa, N.Y./Saint Dominic) earned the victory for FDU-Florham by tossing four innings, allowing three runs (one earned) and four hits to improve to 7-4 on the season. Lima, Crilley, and
Wynne McCann (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) combined to go 6-for-9 at the dish in the win.
Game Two:In the top of the second, trailing 1-0, Crilley evened the score with an RBI-single up the middle but was thrown out attempting to stretch it into a double. The Lady Colonels used back-to-back doubles to add two more runs in the bottom of the inning and staked a 3-1 lead.
The Devils rallied and took the lead in the top of the third inning after a run-scoring single by
Jenna Appello (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) and a two-run double by Lima. Wilkes got back in front with two runs in the home third before
Jaclyn Herrington (Huntington, N.J./Huntington) re-tied the game in the top of the fourth by scoring on a passed ball.
FDU-Florham regained the lead in the top of the fifth on senior shortstop
Maggie Murphy's (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) single up the middle, however, the Lady Colonels exploded in the bottom of the inning. After two run-scoring doubles, senior
Alysha Bixler launched a two-run homer. Wilkes tacked on another run and led 11-6 at the conclusion of the frame. The Lady Colonels ended the game in the sixth inning by scoring three more runs to secure the victory.
Caruso and Murphy each totaled two hits in the loss but the Devils were outhit 21-9 in the contest. Senior
Jordan Borger led Wilkes with four hits in four at-bats, while Bixler went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Next up for the Devils:FDU-Florham heads down the street to take on Madison Avenue rival Drew University, this Tuesday April 15
th at 3 p.m.
