Devils Unable to Quiet Ducks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham Devils softball team were unable to slow the Stevens Institute Ducks' offense and dropped both games of the doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

The Ducks (10-4) took game one 9-1, before claiming the second contest 17-6 over FDU-Florham. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for FDU-Florham, as the Devils drop to 10-5 on the season.

Game One:
The Ducks notched one run off of Devils freshman starter Amanda Finn (Massapequa, N.Y./Sin the first inning and followed with a run in each of the next three frames to stake a 4-0 lead. In the home half of the fourth, FDU-Florham sophomore Nikki Caruso (Madison, N.J./Madison) launched a home run over the center field fence. Unfortunately, Caruso's solo blast would equate to the only run for the Devils.

Stevens tacked on four more runs in the seventh inning by taking advantage of some FDU-Florham defensive miscues. The Devils committed five errors in the loss. Senior pitcher Kayla Berardi was outstanding for the Ducks, striking out seven Devils, while allowing just three hits in the complete -game victory. Freshman Jessica Rees knocked in two runs on two hits for the Ducks in the victory.

Game Two:
The hot-hitting continued for Stevens in the second game of the day. Junior Jamie DeGennaro launched a two-run homer to center field, which highlighted a three-run first inning for the Ducks.  In the bottom of the first, sophomore outfielder Jenna Appello (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) drove her second home run of the season over the fence to bring the Devils within two runs at 3-1.

However, in the top of the second inning, Rees delivered a two-run triple and then scored on another wild pitch, which pushed the Ducks lead to 6-1.

In the bottom of the second, Devils senior Maggie Murphy (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) drove an RBI-double to center field, which was followed one inning later by a run-scoring single from Wynne McCann (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) that cut the Ducks lead to 6-4.

The Stevens offense exploded with 11 runs over the next two frames, which included six RBI-singles. The Ducks hammered out 22 hits in game two en route to the 17-6 victory. Danielle DeFeo finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish and scored three runs, while Gavriella Risman-Jones totaled three hits, three runs and two RBI for the Ducks.

Appello led the Devils with two hits one RBI and one run, while Jaclyn Herrington (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) went 2-for-2 with two runs and drew a walk in defeat. In the loss, McCann notched RBI number 23 on the season, which puts her atop the Freedom Conference in that category.

Stevens junior Brianna Sandone earned the win for the Ducks, improving to 6-1 on the season, while senior Jess Denza (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) took the loss for the Devils and drops to 0-1 on the campaign.
