Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The FDU-Florham Devils softball team opened their 2014 season with a 15-1 rout of Manchester University on Saturday afternoon. In their second game of the day, FDU-Florham fell 5-2 to Bethel University.
Game One
Sophomore pitcher
Sydney Worek (Bordentown, N.J./Florence Township) tossed five innings, allowed one run, five hits and struck out five to earn the five-inning win for the Devils. FDU-Florham sophomore catcher
Wynne McCann (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) was locked in at the dish and finished the game 4-for-4 and plated six runs in the victory.
After Worek, struck out the side in the top of the first inning, the Devils bats exploded with five runs in the home half of the first. Senior outfielder
Brittni Wurst (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North), and sophomore
Jenna Appello (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) each walked and
Nikki Caruso (Madison, N.J./Madison) was hit by a pitch, which set the table for McCann. The Devils catcher promptly unloaded the bases with a three-run double in to the left centerfield gap. Freshman rightfielder
Paige Lillie (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) knocked in two runs with a single, which provided FDU-Florham with a 5-0 lead through one.
The Spartans got on the board with a run in the top of the second inning, but the Devils tacked on four more runs in the home half of the inning to break the game open. FDU-Florham continued to pull away with two runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth to earn the 15-1 victory.
In addition to McCann's hot-hitting, Wurst and Appello each added two knocks and combined to score seven runs on the day. The freshman Lillie picked up her first-career hit and RBI in the win.
Game Two
In their second game of the day, FDU-Florham fell to Bethel University 5-2. (Box Score to come)
Next up for the Devils:
FDU-Florham will play two more games on Sunday, March 16
th. In the first contest, the Devils will take on Babson College, which is followed by a tilt against University of Wisconsin-Stout. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
