Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, PA - After eliminating second-seeded King's earlier in the day, the fourth-seeded College at Florham Devils used the power of freshman first baseman
Wynne McCann and junior catcher
Sarah Lima to eliminate third-seeded Manhattanville, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon in the Freedom Conference Tournament.
With the win, the Devils improved to 22-19 while the Valiants dropped to 22-19. FDU will now go on to play top-seeded DeSales in the Championship Round beginning at 2:30 pm. The Devils must defeat the Bulldogs twice in order to win the tournament while DeSales only has to beat FDU once.
Coming off of a great come-from-behind win over King's, the Devils got things going immediately when junior outfielder
Brittni Wurst walked to start the game. Junior shortstop
Maggie Murphy followed with a single and the pair moved up to second and third after a double steal. Lima then reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for McCann, who provided a grand slam home run to right center to give FDU a 4-0 lead. With two outs in the top of the second, Murphy walked and Lima then made it 6-0 with a two-run blast center field. Freshman pitcher
Sydney Worek and senior pitcher
Karla Babb took over from there as they kept the Valiants in check the rest of the way, only giving up solo runs in the third and fourth innings.
McCann finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run, a run scored and four RBI while Lima and Murphy each scored two runs. Worek got the win on the mound, going 4.1 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits while Babb earned the save, tossing 2.2 innings of shutout ball.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, May 4, 2013, in the Freedom Conference Tournament against top-seeded DeSales beginning at 2:30 pm.
