Missed Chances, Errors Doom #4 Devils In 5-1 Loss To #1 DeSales

Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, PA - The fourth-seeded College at Florham Devils produced eight hits but left seven runners on base while making three errors in the field as they were knocked off by top-seeded DeSales, 5-1, in the Freedom Conference Tournament on Friday morning.  The Devils will now play an elimination game on Saturday morning.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 20-19 while the Bulldogs improved to 26-10-1.

Junior outfielder Brittni Wurst began the game with a single, stole second base, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior shortstop Maggie Murphy.  The Devils could not get her home though, and DeSales scored two runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.  With one out in the top of the third inning, Wurst and Murphy got on base but a fielder's choice and a groundout kept the score at 2-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.  DeSales added a run in the bottom of the fourth before adding two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to grab a 5-0 advantage.  FDU got on the board in the top of the seventh when freshman outfielder Nicole Decker led off with a double and scored when sophomore third baseman Christina Legotti followed with a double of her own.  That's all the Devils would get however, as DeSales retired the next three batters in order to earn the win.

Legotti finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI while Wurst went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.  Junior outfielder Toni-ann Canova also had two hits in the contest.  Senior pitcher Karla Babb suffered the loss on the mound, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits while striking out three.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, May 4, 2013, in the Freedom Conference Tournament against the loser of second-seeded King's and third-seeded Manhattanville beginning at 9 am.
