Devils Sweep Stevens, 8-7 And 9-5

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEEHAWKEN, NJ - The College at Florham Devils swept Stevens, 8-7 and 9-5, in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

With the sweep, the Devils are now 13-9 while the Ducks dropped to 2-22.

GAME ONE - Stevens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning before FDU plated three runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a RBI single from freshman outfielder Jenna Appello, a sacrifice fly from junior shortstop Maggie Murphy, and a Stevens error.  The Ducks got all three of those runs right back though, grabbing a 5-3 lead in their half of the fifth but the Devils responded with four in the top of the sixth on a grand slam home run from Appello.  FDU made it 8-5 in the top of the seventh on another Stevens error.  While the Ducks cut it to 8-7 with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Devils were able to get out of it and pick up the win.

Appello finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base, two runs scored and five RBI while senior pitcher Karla Babb was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Babb also picked up the win on the mound, tossing seven innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits.

GAME TWO - FDU got on the board first in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning thanks to a RBI single by freshman pitcher Sydney Worek, a RBI single from Appello, and a bases loaded walk from Murphy.  The Devils made it 5-0 in the top of the third on a RBI single from Worek and a Stevens error.  FDU grabbed an 8-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a three-run home run by freshman first baseman Wynne McCann but the Ducks plated two in the bottom of the fifth to cut it to 8-2.  The Devils went up 9-2 in the top of the sixth thanks to a solo home run from junior designated hitter Sarah Lima but Stevens trimmed it to 9-5 in their half of the fifth.  That's as close as they would get though as Worek shut the door and allowed the Devils to pick up the sweep.

Lima and freshman outfielder Nicole Decker each finished with two hits and a run scored while Worek went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.  She also picked up the win on the rubber, going seven innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits.

The Devils return to action on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at Old Westbury beginning at 3 pm.
