Box Score 2 MADISON, NJ - The College at Florham Devils handed Manhattanville their first Freedom Conference loss of the season on Friday afternoon by beating the Valiants by a score of 4-3 before dropping the nightcap by a count of 10-1 in six innings.
With the split, the Devils are now 7-7 (3-1 Freedom) while the Valiants are 9-9 (4-1 Freedom).
GAME ONE - Manhattanville struck first with a run in the top of the first inning but FDU got that back in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a solo home run from freshman designated hitter
Wynne McCann. The Valiants grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth but the Devils plated three in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, junior outfielder
Brittni Wurst singled, stole second base and scored on a RBI single from junior outfielder
Toni-ann Canova. With runner's on first and third, junior shortstop
Maggie Murphy bunted and although the runner was out at the plate, no one was covering third base so sophomore infielder
Colleen Moriarty smartly went from first to third and the Manhattanville catcher threw the ball into left field trying to get Moriarty at third which allowed her to score. Murphy, who never stopped running, hustled all the way around to score on the play herself which gave the Devils the lead. Senior pitcher
Karla Babb shut the door in the seventh, allowing the Devils to earn the victory.
Babb picked up the win on the mound, tossing seven innings while allowing three runs on seven hits.
GAME TWO - The Valiants again struck with a run in the top of the first inning before the Devils tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on a Manhattanville error. It was all Manhattanville from there though, as the Valiants scored four in the third, two in the fourth and three in the sixth to pick up the 10-1 win and the split.
Freshman pitcher
Sydney Worek took the loss on the rubber, going four innings and allowing seven runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out three.
The Devils return to action on Thursday, April 4, 2013, at home against Stockton beginning at 3 pm.
