Devils Sweep Eastern In Freedom Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MADISON, NJ - The College at Florham Devils knocked off Eastern, 9-5 and 3-1, in their Freedom Conference on Saturday afternoon.

With the sweep, the Devils improved to 5-5 (2-0 Freedom) while the Eagles dropped to 4-10 (0-4 Freedom).

GAME ONE - Eastern jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning before FDU got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first on an Eagle error.  The Devils grabbed a 6-4 advantage with five runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a RBI fielder's choice from junior shortstop Maggie Murphy, another RBI fielder's choice by junior outfielder Toni-ann Canova, a RBI double from freshman first baseman Wynne McCann, and a two-run double by junior catcher Sarah Lima.  FDU made it 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by freshman outfielder Jenna Appello before grabbing a 9-4 edge in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI sacrifice bunt from Appello and a RBI single from Murphy.  Eastern got one run back in the top of the seventh but the Devils ended the potential rally and picked up the win.

Junior outfielder Brittni Wurst finished the game 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs scored.  Lima, Murphy, and Appello each drove in two runs for FDU.  Senior pitcher Karla Babb picked up the win on the mound, tossing sevening innings and allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out four.

GAME TWO - The Eagles again struck first with a run in the top of the first inning but the Devils got it right back in the bottom of the first thanks to a RBI double from Murphy.  FDU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead on a RBI sacrifice bunt from Murphy and a RBI double by junior first baseman Kristie Crilley.  Freshman pitcher Sydney Worek took over from there, completely shutting down Eastern for the last four innings to give FDU the sweep.

Appello finished with two hits and two runs scored while Murphy drove in two runs.  Worek picked up the win on the rubber, going seven innings and allowing one run (unearned) on four hits while striking out nine.

The Devils return to action on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Centenary beginning at 3 pm.
