MADISON, NJ - The College at Florham Devils swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader from Wilkes, 9-4 and 10-7, on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Devils improved to 11-13 (7-3 Freedom) while the Colonels dropped to 3-19 (2-8 Freedom).
GAME ONE - Junior outfielder
Ronica Sorice got the Devils on the board first with a RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. After Wilkes tied it at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, FDU responeded with three in the bottom half on a two-run home run by junior third baseman
Megan Golembiewski and a solo home run from senior outfielder
Megan Boyle. Wilke cut it to 4-3 in the top of sixth but the Devils plated five in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-3 lead thanks to a two-run
double from freshman outfielder
Brittni Wurst, a RBI single by Boyle and a two-run single from sophomore designated hitter
Sam Greenwood. The Colonels came back with a run in the top of the seventh but the Devils shut them down from there to get the win.
Wurst finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI while Boyle went 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI. Junior pitcher
Karla Babb picked up the win on the mound, tossing seven innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out five.
GAME TWO - FDU got on the board first once again, this time with two runs in the third on a two-run home run by freshman catcher
Sarah Lima. The Colonels scored four unearned runs in the top of the fourth to grab a 4-2 lead but the Devils plated five in the bottom half thanks to a two-run double from sophomore first baseman
Elizabeth Spiller, a wild pitch, and RBI singles from Wurst and Lima to grab a 7-4 advantage. Wilkes cut it to 7-5 in the the top of the fifth but FDU made it 9-5 in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by sophomore shortstop
Renee Migliacci and a Colonel error. The Colonels kept coming though, plating two in the top of the sixth to close to within 9-7 but FDU got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double from sophomore second baseman
Christine Antoniotti to put the game out of reach.
Lima finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and three RBI while Wurst and Migliacci each had two hits. Golembiewski picked up the win, going four innings and allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits. Sophomore pitcher
Brianne Conanan earned the save, tossing three innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit.
The Devils return to action on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at home against Kean beginning at 3 pm.
