Devils Split With Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, NJ - The College at Florham Devils were defeated by Rutgers-Newark, 10-0 (5), in Game One before rebounding to win the nightcap, 7-2, in non-conference action on Thursday evening.

With the split, the Devils now stand at 8-14.

GAME ONE - Newark got on the board with a solo run in the bottom of the third inning before exploding for nine runs in the fourth inning that put the game away.  The Devils only mustered two hits in the game, one apiece from junior catcher Brianne Faynor (Cliffwood, NJ/Brookdale CC) and sophomore designated hitter Megan McInaw (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough).

Sophomore pitcher Megan Golembiewski (Beacon, NY/Beacon) suffered the loss, going 3.2 innings and allowing 10 runs (only one earned) on seven hits while striking out four.  The Devils made six errors in the field behind Golembiewski.

GAME TWO - Newark scored the first run again, this time in the bottom of the first inning, but the Devils came back to tie it at 1-1 in the top of the second on a Scarlet Raider error.  The Devils plated three more in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage thanks to an error and a two-run single by freshman second baseman Christine Antoniotti (Glen Cove, NY/Kellenberg).  FDU made it 7-1 in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by senior designated hitter Christine Heyl (Avon, NJ/St. Rose) and another Newark error.  The Scarlet Raiders got one back in the bottom of the seventh but that was all the Devils would allow in earning the split.

Heyl finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI while McInaw went 2-for-4 with a double.  McInaw also got the win on the mound, throwing seven innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out 12.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at home against Misericordia beginning at 1 pm.
