ST. DAVID'S, PA - The College at Florham Devils split a Freedom Conference doubleheader with Eastern on Saturday afternoon, winning Game One by a score of 9-2 before dropping the nightcap by a margin of 9-8 in eight innings.
With the split, the Devils now stand at 11-17 (3-7 Freedom) while the Eagles are 11-19 (3-7 Freedom).
GAME ONE - Eastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning before the Devils came back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead on a two-run single by sophomore outfielder
Ronica Sorice (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). The Eagles tied it at 2-2 in their half of the sixth but FDU exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning to put the game away thanks to a two-run double by sophomore pitcher
Megan McInaw (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), a RBI single by senior first baseman
Christine Heyl (Avon, NJ/St. Rose), a two-runs single by Sorice, a RBI single by freshman designated hitter
Sam Greenwood (Riverton, NJ/Palmyra) and an error by Eastern.
Sorice finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI while McInaw went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI. McInaw also picked up the win on the mound, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight.
GAME TWO - The Devils struck first in the second game, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning on a three-run home run by McInaw. Eastern came back in the bottom of the first with four runs to take a 4-3 lead but the Devils went back ahead in the top of the fifth, 5-4, on a RBI double by junior outfielder
Brianne Faynor (Cliffwood, NJ/Brookdale CC) and a RBI single by McInaw. Eastern came right back again though, posting three runs in their half of the fifth to take a 7-5 advantage. The Devils tied it at 7-7 in the top of the sixth on a two-run home run by junior catcher
Megan Boyle (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) before going up 8-7 in the top of the eight inning on a RBI single by Faynor. The Eagles won it in the bottom of the eight inning on a walk-off two-run home run.
Faynor finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI while McInaw went 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and four RBI. Freshman pitcher
Karla Babb (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Pope John) suffered the loss in relief, coming on to pitch 6.1 innings while allowing five runs on 10 hits.
The Devils return to action on Sunday, April 18, 2010, at Kean beginning at noon.
