Devils Swept By Wilkes, 5-4

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The College at Florham Devils dropped both games of a doubleheader to Wilkes, 5-4, in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the losses, the Devils dropped to 5-11 (0-2 Freedom) while the Colonels improved to 5-9 (2-2 Freedom).

GAME ONE - FDU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI single by junior catcher Brianne Faynor (Cliffwood, NJ/Brookdale CC).  The Devils then took a 2-0 lead in the third thanks to a RBI single by sophomore third baseman Megan Golembiewski (Beacon, NY/Beacon) and then a 3-0 lead in the fourth on a solo home run by junior outfielder Megan Boyle (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield).  Wilkes tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning and grabbed a 5-3 lead in the sixth.  The Devils cut it to 5-4 in the top of the seventh on a RBI double by Golembiewski and had the bases loaded with one out, but the next two batters struck out as Wilkes escaped with the win.

Golembiewski finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while sophomore outfielder Ronica Sorice (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) had two hits and a run scored.  Sophomore pitcher Megan McInaw (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out five in six innings of work.

GAME TWO - The Devils grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a RBI single by Golembiewski.  FDU made it 2-0 in the top of the sixth thanks to a RBI fielder's choice from senior shortstop Marysa Cole (Washington Township, NJ/Westwood) but the Colonels plated three in their half of the sixth to grab a 3-2 advantage.  FDU came right back with two in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead on a RBI singles by Golembiewski and Boyle.  The Devils couldn't put it away in the bottom of the seventh though, as the Colonels tied it at 4-4 and then won on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth.

Golembiewski went 2-for-3 with two RBI at the plate while tossing 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits on the mound.  Freshman pitcher Karla Babb (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Pope John) suffered the loss in relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in 1.1 innings.

The Devils return to action on Sunday, March 28, 2010, at home against Delaware Valley beginning at noon.
