Madison, NJ (July 5)- Throughout the next weeks, we will be taking a look back and ranking our top 10 moments of the 2023-24 season. There were a ton of great games and performances from this past calendar year, and we are excited to look back and recap some of these moments with our fans!
Making our top 10 list at #3 Swimming Earns Medals and Breaks Records at MAC Championships
The FDU-Florham swimming teams went into the MAC Championships with a lot of pressure after what they delivered the season previously, especially for the women's squad who had their best MAC Championship in program with 681 points totaled and finishing sixth out of 14 teams competing. While the points from both teams did not exceed last year's, the placements stayed the same with the women's team finishing sixth again and the men's squad matching their ninth-place finish from the season previous.
What has become habitual for the Devils swim program at the conference championship meet is breaking program records and racking up placements on the podium. FDU-Florham saw a total of 10 podium finishes among the two teams, three broken records and one tied record, and two medal placements at the 2024 MAC Championships.
The Devils were once again led by
Sarah Dougherty (Kinnelon, N.J.), who in her final MAC Championship racked up two bronze medals in the 200 IM (2:13.76) and the 200 back (2:10.30) while also making her contributions to relay teams. Her 200 back time became a school record, and she finished her career with a total of five MAC Championship medals and stamped her name on nine total school records.
Magda Konopka (Paramus, N.J.) became the school's 50 free record holder when she clocked a 24.66 en route to finishing just outside of medal placement with a fourth-place finish.
James Dougherty (Kinnelon, N.J.) found himself individually on two podiums in the 400 IM (4:20.07) and the 200 breast, where he tied his own record to the tenth of a second with a time of 2:14.08.
Julianna Fazzio (Glassboro, N.J.) earned her first individual podium placement in the 100 fly where she clocked a 1:01.30 en route to a sixth-place finish.
When it came to the relay events, the Devils saw six total podium finishes with the women's squad collecting four while the men's team picked up a pair. The relay events were highlighted by the 200 free relay women's quartet of Dougherty, Fazzio, Konopka and
Katelyn Plank (Bridgewater, N.J.), who broke the school record with a time of 1:39.55.
The MAC Championships have become a true test for the FDU-Florham swimming program's and have gotten the very best out of the student-athletes that compete in them. Over the last few years, the bar has been set and as the programs continue to grow, it is going to be a theme to see the records fall and the medals will surely follow.
