Box Score DALLAS, Pa. – The FDU-Florham Devils men's lacrosse team earned a tightly-contested victory on Wednesday night by defeating Misericordia University, 10-9 in their first Freedom Conference contest of the season.
Freshman
Connor May (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) paced the Devils (6-4, 1-0 Freedom) by totaling four goals, including the game-winner.
The Cougars (4-5, 0-1 Freedom) took a 1-0 lead after sophomore
Lane Kocovsky's man-up goal but the Devils responded thanks to two strikes by the team's leading scorer
Frank Reda (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West). Reda's two goals give him a conference-leading 41 on the season.
FDU-Florham held a 5-4 lead at intermission, thanks to two goals apiece from Reda and senior midfielder
Lance O'Donovan (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland).
The Cougars jumped back on top by scoring the first two goals of the second half and led 8-6 at the conclusion of the third quarter. However, FDU-Florham grabbed control of the game in the fourth period. May fired home an assist from freshman
Matt Melnik (Clifton, N.J./Clifton), which brought the Devils within one.
Eight minutes later, May struck again, this time an unassisted goal, which evened the score at 8-8. Next, Melnik took advantage of a man-up situation to put the Devils on top briefly, as the Cougars countered and knotted the game at 9-9 with 3:05 remaining in regulation.
With 26 seconds to play, Melnik connected with May for the second time, which resulted in the game's decisive goal. In addition to his one goal and two assists, Melnik picked up five ground balls, while Reda also added five ground balls for the Devils in the win.
FDU-Florham junior goalkeeper
Gerry Yotcoski (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) totaled 10 saves and improved to 5-0 on the season. The Devils were out-shot 38-31 in the contest but landed more shots on goal than the Cougars (21-19).
Misericordia senior
Nicholas Santillo led the Cougars with four goals and three ground balls, while Kocovsky finished with three goals in the loss.
