-- The FDU-Florham men's lacrosse team took a hard-fought 13-8 loss to the Stockton College Ospreys at Robert T. Shields Field on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Devils are now 1-2 on the season, while Stockton improved to 2-1 on the campaign.
The first quarter was a back-and-fourth contest between the two sides. The Ospreys struck first but less than two minutes later, FDU-Florham freshman
Connor May (Rochester, N.Y./ Greece Arcadia) got the Devils on the board and evened the score a 1-1. After another quick strike by the Ospreys, Devils freshman midfielder
Matt Melnik (Clifton NJ/ Clifton) fired home an assist from teammate
Lance O'Donovan (Duxbury, Mass/Duxbury) to knot the game at 2-2.
Stockton proceeded to break the game open by scoring six unanswered goals to claim an 8-2 advantage with 8:35 to play in the opening half. FDU-Florham junior attacker
Frank Reda (Hauppauge, N.Y./ Smithtown West), was responsible for the Devils lone goal of the second quarter. Reda had two goals on the afternoon, which gives him a total of 10 in two games.
The Devils entered the break trailing 9-3 but remained determined. O'Donovan began the comeback when he put the ball past the goalkeeper with 7:35 left in the third quarter. Freshmen
Dalton Rimmer (Vernon, N.J./ Vernon Township) and
Dan Decker (East Setauket N.Y./ Ward Melville) each netted their first collegiate goals and sophomore
Daniel Minnich (Laurys Station, Pa./ Parkland) added a strike, which brought the Devils within three at 10-7.
With 9:11 to play in regulation, Reda notched his second goal of the contest to cut the Ospreys lead down to two. However, the Ospreys thwarted the comeback by scoring the game's final three goals, which resulted in the 13-8 final.
The offensive attack was balanced as Stockton held a 34-29 advantage in shot attempts. Senior goalkeeper
George Beck (Mendham, N.J./ Mendham) finished with 11 saves for the Devils in the loss.
Sophomore attacker
Vincent Manasia paced the Ospreys with four goals, while teammates
Nick Bologno and
Vinny Gencarelli each tallied three goals in the win.
