Dertouzos' Ninth-Inning Single Sends Devils Past Pioneers

Box Score LAKE MYRTYLE, Fla. – Sophomore James Dertouzos (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) delivered a game-winning, two-out base hit in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the Devils past Utica College 7-6 on Tuesday afternoon.

Dertouzos' single plated freshman Nick DeAngelis (East Hanover, N.J./Morris Catholic) and the Devils improved to 3-3 on the season. Junior right-hander Bobby Bray earned the win after pitching the ninth inning.

Through three and a half innings, FDU-Florham trailed 4-0 but the Devils bats sprung to life in the bottom of the fourth. Kyle Herron (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) hammered a two-run triple and Kevin Sinclair (Fairfield Conn./Fairfield Prep) followed with an RBI-single to bring the Devils within one at 4-3.

The Devils knotted the game at 4-4 after a throwing error by the Pioneers second baseman. Senior Frank LaGuarina (Somerset, N.J./Immaculata) made Ithaca pay by driving an RBI-double, which put FDU-Florham on top 5-4. Ben Lyman (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) followed LaGuarina with an RBI-double of his own to give the Devils a two-run advantage.

However, the Pioneers rallied with two runs in the top of the ninth off of FDU-Florham right-hander Billy Bray (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) to even the score at 6-6. Bray settled in and stopped the bleeding by striking out three Pioneers in a row to keep the game tied.

Fortunately, in the bottom of the ninth DeAngelis, making his first start for the Devils, drew a walk, stole second and then scored the winning-run on Dertouzos' single.

For the Devils, Sean Geiger (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) and Ryan Thurmes (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) eached tossed a scoreless inning in relief of starter Joe Hofman (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) Hofman went six innings, allowed four runs and struck out three and earned a no-decision.
