Devils Fall to Cross-Street Rival 6-4

Box Score MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham Devils men's lacrosse team dropped a low-scoring contest to cross-street rival Drew University 6-4 on Wednesday night at Robert T. Shields Field.

The Devils (1-1, 0-0 Freedom) led 3-2 at intermission but the Rangers (1-0, 0-0 Landmark) outscored FDU-Florham 4-1 in the second half to earn the victory in their season opener. FDU-Florham junior attacker Frank Reda (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) was responsible for three of the Devils' four goals in the loss. The junior has now totaled eight goals in the Devils two contests this season.

Four minutes into action, Drew's senior captain Mike Marone opened the scoring by netting an unassisted goal. With 7:53 to play in the first period, FDU-Florham sophomore attacker Daniel Minnich (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) got the Devils into the scoring column with his second goal of the season, which was assisted by Reda.

The Rangers claimed a 2-1 lead after one period, but Reda went to work in the second period by netting two goals and sent the Devils into the break with a 3-2 lead.

Reda kept the momentum rolling in the second half, and started the third quarter with a goal at the 13:34 mark, which provided FDU-Florham a 4-2 advantage. Unfortunately, the goal would be the last for the Devils on the night, as the Rangers proceeded to score the game's final four strikes to earn the victory.

Senior Mark Barus paced the Rangers with two goals, while freshman goalkeeper Teddy Sweeney made four saves in his career debut. FDU-Florham junior Josh Stokes (Paterson, N.J./Paramus Catholic) caused five turnovers in defeat.

The Devils have now dropped four straight to their neighborhood rival since the two teams resumed play in 2011.

Next up for the Devils:
FDU-Florham takes on Stockton College this Saturday, March 1st with start time slated for 2 p.m. at Robert T. Shields Field.
