Box Score Doylestown, Pa. – The FDU-Florham Devils struggled to halt the #17th ranked Delaware Valley College Aggies in a 55-7 loss on Saturday afternoon in Doylestown, PA.
The Devils (0-9, 0-8 MAC) fell behind early in the first half, but in the second quarter they were able to bring themselves within a field goal before the Aggies (9-0, 8-0 MAC) offense put up 42 unanswered points.
Junior running back for the Devils,
Anthony Ognibene (Chester, N.Y.), was a bright spot for the Devils offense as he was able to score the team's lone touchdown in the contest while rushing for a team-high 55 yards. This was Ognibene's second consecutive game with a rushing touchdown.
The Aggies high powered offense was led by the leading receiver in the MAC Conference, Rasheed Bailey, who reeled in 10 catches for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback for the Aggies, Aaron Wilmer had a good game in the air throwing for 283 with four touchdowns on 18 completions. Delaware Valley showed its offensive versatility against the Devils by throwing and running the ball efficiently. The MAC Conference leading rusher, Chris Smallwood carried the ball 16 times for 101 yards and a touchdown. Smallwood also recorded one catch that went for a 62-yard touchdown.
A good defensive effort was put forth by the Devils to limit the Aggies offense to 10 first quarter points. In the second quarter after an early Delaware Valley field goal, the Devils took control of the ball and successfully worked their way down the field. With just over three minutes remaining in the half, Ognibene was able to punch the ball into the end zone on a 2-yard run to cap off a 77-yard drive by the Devils.
Down by just six with under a minute to play in the half, the Devils defense was unable to hold off a late push from Wilmer and the Aggies. Wilmer was able to find Bailey in the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown pass to put the Aggies up 20-7.
With the momentum on the side of the Aggies, their offense came out of the half looking to score early and often. On their first two possessions in the third quarter, Wilmer threw for 95 yards and two touchdowns on four completions.
The following Devils drive, quarterback
Tyler Maurer (West Milford, N.J.) led the team down the field as they looked to answer quickly. Maurer completed four passes to freshman wide out
Malik Pressley (Sayreville, N.J.) on the drive. However, the Aggies defense was able to pick off Maurer and stop the Devils attack.
Nine seconds into the fourth quarter, Wilmer connected with Bailey for a 47-yard touchdown to give the Aggies a 41-7 advantage. The Devils were unable to acquire any scoring chances in the fourth quarters as the Aggies defense clamped down.
The Aggies outgained the Devils 573-164 and were able to hold the FDU-Florham offense to 2.5 yards per play. Maurer went 13-28 and threw for 75 yards in the game. Pressley was the Devils leading receiver bringing in a team-high six receptions for 48 yards.
