Devils Fall After Second-Half Surge By Mustangs

Box Score Madison, N.J. – It was a frustrating home opener for the FDU-Florham Devils (1-1, 0-1 MAC), as they fell to the Mustangs of Stevenson University (3-0, 2-0 MAC) 55-22 on Friday night at Robert T. Shields Field.

Mustangs running back Trey Lee (Lusby, MD/Patuxent), was on his game from the opening whistle, compiling a school-record 158 yards on the ground along with four touchdowns in the victory for Stevenson.

Devils tailback Craig Kimbrough (Dover, NJ/Morris Catholic) ran the ball well in defeat, totaling 137 yards on 14 attempts, but FDU could not slow down the high-powered Stevenson attack.

Trailing 7-0 in the first quarter, the Devils evened things up when quarterback Mike Santos (North Arlington, NJ/St. Mary's) snuck into the end zone from 5-yards out, capping a five-play, 91-yard drive for FDU.

In the second quarter, with Stevenson leading 21-13, Kimbrough broke free courtesy of an outstanding block by wide receiver Joe Tauriello (Bloomfield, NJ/St.Mary's), cruising to a 44-yard touchdown run. The Devils would fail to convert on the two-point conversion, resulting in a 21-19 deficit.

After Lee's second touchdown, FDU placekicker Sean Gavin (Upton, MA/St.John's Shrewsbury) knocked home a 35-yard field goal, sending the Devils into the half trailing 28-22.

This game was decided in the third quarter, as the Mustangs capitalized on some FDU miscues, scoring three straight times, all highlighted by a 45-yard fumble recovery for a score.

With the loss, the Devils fall to 0-3 all-time against the Mustangs, who currently sit atop the MAC standings.

Next up for the Devils:
FDU heads to Annville, PA to take on the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen (1-1) next Saturday, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. The Devils will look to avenge last season's 41-14 defeat at the hands of the Dutchmen and get back over the .500 mark.
