Box Score MADISON, NJ - Trailing by a score of 13-12 with 5:01 left in the fourth quarter, Misericordia scored the final two goals of the game, including the game-winner with 0:27 to go, to beat the College at Florham Devils by a count of 14-13 in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 2-9 (0-1 Freedom) while the Cougars improved to 6-4 (1-0 Freedom).
The Devils got off to a good start, scoring two of the first three goals of the game as senior attack
Cody McHugh and freshman attack
Daniel Minnich found the back of the net. Misericordia came right back though, reeling off the next four goals to grab a 5-2 lead with 5:14 left in the first quarter. FDU cut it to 5-4 when McHugh and sophomore attack
Frank Reda scored back-to-back goals but the Cougars scored two of the final three goals of the quarter to take a 7-5 lead after one. FDU tied it at 7-7 early in the second quarter when Reda and McHugh notched two straight goals but Misericordia went back up by one, 8-7, with 8:52 to go before McHugh converted a feed from Reda with 0:48 remaining to tie the halftime score at 8-8.
FDU tallied the first two goals of the third quarter to grab a 10-8 lead thanks to Reda and junior midfielder
Jake Higgins. Misericordia got those two goals right back however, and the third quarter ended in a 10-10 stalemate. The Cougars pumped in the first goal of the fourth quarter but FDU came right back and scored two straight (Higgins and McHugh) to take a 12-11 lead with 7:27 to go. Misericordia tied it at 12-12 with 5:31 to play and drew a penalty on the play but senior midfielder
Cory Weiss found Reda for a man-down goal just 0:30 later to give FDU a 13-12 advantage. The Cougars evened things onced again with 3:37 to play and then won the ensuing face-off, which they then used to run down the clock. With 0:27 to go, Misericordia found the back of the net to take a 14-13 lead but the Devils had one more opportunity to tie the game. After winning the face-off, Weiss got the ball and raced down the right side which drew the defense to him. He then found a cutter in junior midfielder
Lance O'Donovan, who got a great shot off, but the Misericordia goalkeeper made a tremendous save to seal the victory.
McHugh finished the game with six goals and an assist while Weiss added six assists. Reda tallied four goals, Higgins notched two goals, and Minnich recorded a goal and an assist. Freshman goalkeeper
Tim Zangara was outstanding in goal despite the loss, as he made a career-high 21 saves.
