Devils Drop Overtime Heartbreaker To King's, 9-8

Box Score MADISON, NJ - Trailing by a score of 8-6 with 3:41 left in regulation, the College at Florham Devils got goals from junior midfielder Jake Higgins and sophomore attack Frank Reda to send the game to overtime but King's scored the game-winner with 1:15 gone by to earn the 9-8 victory.  The win sends King's to the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament while the loss means the Devils will miss the conference tournament for the first time since 2002.

With the loss, the Devils finish the season with a record of 4-12 (2-4 Freedom) while the Monarchs improved to 10-3 (4-2 Freedom).

FDU got off to a great start, scoring the only two goals of the first quarter as freshman attack Daniel Minnich and Reda found the back of the net.  King's responded in the second quarter though, scoring four straight goals to take a 4-2 lead into halftime.  The Monarchs then came out and scored the first two goals of the third quarter to grab a 6-2 advantage before senior midfielder Cody McHugh cut the deficit to 6-3 with 9:29 left in the third.  McHugh then found junior midfielder Lance O'Donovan for a goal to make it 6-4 before Reda scored the last goal of the third off a pass from senior attack Cory Weiss to pull the Devils to within 6-5 heading into the fourth quarter.  McHugh tied the game at 6-6 when he converted a pass from Weiss with 12:52 to go but King's won the faceoff, raced down field and scored to take a 7-6 lead.  The Monarchs then made it 8-6 with 7:58 remaining before Higgins drilled home a feed from Weiss to cut it to 8-7 with 3:41 left.  With under a minute left in regulation, Reda was knocked to his knees but still somehow managed to get a shot off that tied the game at 8-8 and sent thing to overtime.

King's won the faceoff in overtime but FDU forced a turnover, however the Devils turned it back over on the clear attempt to give the Monarchs the ball back.  After a bad pass from King's resulted in a scrum in front of the goal, the Monarchs regained possession and fired in the game-winner which allowed them to qualify for the conference tournament.

Reda led the Devils with three goals, McHugh added two goals and an assist, and Weiss tallied four assists.  Senior midfielder Michael Rosellini went 10-for-18 on faceoffs and picked up three ground balls.  Freshman goalkeeper Tim Zangara suffered the hard-luck loss, making 13 saves.
