Scarpello Gets 100th Career Win As FDU Beats Dominican, 10-9

Box Score HILLBURN, NY - Sophomore attack Frank Reda recorded four goals and an assist while senior midfielder Cory Weiss added three goals and two assists to lead the College at Florham Devils past Dominican, a Division II school, by a score of 10-9 on Monday afternoon.  The win was the 100th at FDU for Head Coach Pat Scarpello.

With the win, the Devils improved to 2-5 while the Chargers dropped to 0-3.

Dominican got off to a fast start, scoring the first three goals of the game before junior midfielder Jake Higgins got the Devils on the board when he converted a feed from Reda with 10:18 left in the first quarter.  That goal started a string of seven consecutive tallies that gave FDU a 7-3 advantage with 11:07 to go in the second quarter.  During the run, Higgins, Reda, and Weiss scored two goals apiece while freshman attack Daniel Minnich scored the other goal.  After the Chargers cut it to 7-4, Reda got the goal right back when he banged home a pass from Higgins with 5:08 to go in the half.  Dominican scored the final goal of the half and cut it to 8-5 with just 0:29 to go.

Reda put FDU up, 9-5, four minutes into the third quarter but the Chargers made it 9-6 with 7:52 to go in the third.  Neither squad notched another goal until Dominican cut it to 9-7 with 0:37 gone by in the fourth quarter.  The teams then went scoreless again for a prolonged stretch until Weiss found the back of the net with 2:28 to go in what turned out to be a huge goal.  The Chargers then won the face-off and raced down field to get the goal right back and make the score 10-8 with 2:16 remaining.  Dominican pulled to within one, 10-9, with 1:33 to go but the Devils were able to run the clock out on their way to victory.

Higgins finished the game with two goals and an assist while senior midfielder Ryan Reuther went 14-of-21 on face-offs with 11 ground balls.  Senior midfielder Joe Yobbi caused five turnovers and picked up five ground balls.  Freshman goalkeeper Tim Zangara picked up his first collegiate win, making nine saves.

The Devils return to action on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at home against the University of New England beginning at 4 pm.
