Devils Outlasted By Cross-Town Rival Drew, 15-11

Box Score MADISON, NJ - With the game tied at 6-6 entering the second half, Drew had a 5-1 advantage in goals in the third quarter on their way to a 15-11 victory over the College at Florham Devils in the battle for the Madison Cup on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-2 while the Rangers improved to 1-0.

FDU got off to a good start, scoring the first two goals of the game thanks to sophomore attack Frank Reda and junior midfielder Jake Higgins.  The Rangers came right back though, reeling off the next four goals to take a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.  FDU started the second quarter with back-to-back goals from freshman attack Daniel Minnich and Higgins to tie the game at 4-4 but Drew made it 5-4 with 6:11 to go in the half.  The Devils scored two in a row however, to grab a 6-5 lead with the goals coming from senior attack Cody McHugh and sophomore attack Frank Salustri.  Drew scored the final goal of the second quarter to tie the game at 6-6 heading into intermission.

The Rangers dominated the third quarter, scoring the first three goals to take a 9-6 lead.  FDU pulled to within 9-7 when McHugh found the back of the net but Drew scored the final two goals of the quarter grab an 11-7 edge. Drew really blew the game open to start the fourth, as they tallied three consecutive goals to go up by a count of 14-7 with 11:05 to go.  Senior midfielder Cory Weiss made it 14-8 but Drew got that right back to go back on top by seven, 15-8.  Higgins scored two goals while McHugh added one goal in the final five minutes as the Devils tried to make a push but the Rangers had wrapped things up by that point to pick up the win.

Higgins led the Devils with four goals while McHugh added three goals.  Weiss finished with one goal and two assists.  Sophomore midfielder Peter Biondi picked up five ground balls while senior midfielder Michael Rossellini went 13-of-23 on faceoffs.  Freshman goalkeeper Joe Miller suffered the loss, making five saves.

The Devils return to action on Sunday, March 3, 2013, at home against Plattsburgh State beginning at 1 pm.
