Box Score MADISON, N.J. – FDU-Florham left it all on the field Friday night against Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) rival Delaware Valley College, but were unable to pull off the upset, ultimately falling 45-30.
The Devils (1-5, 0-5 MAC) led 23-21 at the half, and 30-29 early in the third quarter, but were outscored by the Aggies 16-0 in the final 16 minutes of play. With the win, Delaware Valley (5-1, 4-1 MAC) is now tied with Lycoming College and Lebanon Valley College for first place in the conference.
The Aggie attack was led by senior tailback Kyle Schuberth. The workhorse back carried the ball 35 times for 183 yards and rushed for four scores. Quarterback Mike Santos (North Arlington, N.J./St. Mary's) led the way for the Devils completing 16 of 31 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown.
Leading 30-29, a shanked punt by the Devils set the Aggies up at the FDU 38-yard line. Delaware Valley quarterback Charlie Marterella hit wide receiver Rasheed Bailey for a 30-yard pass which led to a 31-yard Aggie field goal for the game's decisive score.
Trailing 38-30, the Devils appeared to recover a fourth-and-one Schuberth fumble in their own territory, but the officials ruled that there was an inadvertent whistle and the Aggies retained possession. With new life, Delaware Valley handed the ball to Schuberth on four straight plays, resulting in a touchdown, and the game's decisive score with just 2:48 left to play.
Following a Delaware Valley touchdown on their opening drive, the Devils entered the scoring column courtesy of a 33-yard field goal by
Sean Gavin (Upton, MA/St. John's Shrewsbury). On the Aggie's next possession, Schuberth capped a seven-play, 50-yard drive with his second touchdown of the night which provided Delaware Valley with a 14-3 advantage.
After an Aggie fumble, the Devils put together a 60-yard drive that was finished off by an 11-yard Santos touchdown run, cutting the Delaware Valley lead to 14-10.
Robert Loneker (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) and
Mike Mancino (Weston, Fla/Cypress Bay) teamed up to sack Marterella and forced an Aggie punt. The Devils offense wasted no time moving down the field, as senior wide out
Anthony Fruncillo (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) hauled in a 52-yard pass from Santos down to the Delaware Valley 10-yard line. Out of the wildcat formation, Fruncillo rushed into the end zone from four yards out to give the Devils their first lead of the night 17-14, with 9:21 to go in the half.
Marterella capped a 15-play, 65-yard drive when he found Lewis Vincent streaking across the end zone to put Delaware Valley back on top 21-17, with 3:09 remaining in the opening half.
FDU responded with a highlight-reel play when Santos hit freshman speedster
Esaun Mobley (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) on a swing pass to the left side. Mobley untouched, jetted 64-yards down the sideline for his third touchdown of the season and sent the Devils into intermission with a 23-21 lead.
FDU went three-and-out on their opening possession of the second half. Delaware Valley's special teams unit managed to block
Dan DiProfio's (Springfield, N.J./Dayton) fourth down punt, scoop it up and return it for a touchdown to regain the lead 29-23, just 1:40 into the third quarter.
Fruncillo's second touchdown run of the night, this one from 11-yards out, put the Devils ahead 30-29 before the Aggies ultimately pulled out the win.
In defeat, Fruncillo snagged eight receptions for 113 yards to go along with five rushes for 35 yards and the two scores.
Junior linebacker
Nick Barber (Staten Island, N.Y./CSI) led the Devil defense with nine tackles.
