Adam Koontz found the back of the goal to give the third-seeded College at Florham Devils a 7-6 victory over second-seeded King's in the Semifinals of the Freedom Conference Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Devils improved to 8-7 while the Monarchs dropped to 7-8. FDU will now go on to play top-seeded Eastern in the Freedom Conference Tournament Finals on Thursday.
The Devils got on the board first thanks to a goal from senior midfielder
Paul Colflesh just 1:26 into the first quarter. King's came back with the next two goals to grab a 2-1 lead before Koontz tied it at 2-2 with 5:43 left in the first quarter. The Monarchs scored the final goal of the first period and the game remained 3-2 in favor of the Monarchs until there was 1:45 left in the second quarter. That's when junior attack
Cody McHugh evened the game at 3-3, sending the game into halftime all tied up.
FDU scored the lone goal of the third quarter to grab a 4-3 advantage when freshman attack
Frank Reda converted with 6:07 to go. The fourth quarter featured an offensive explosion as the two squads went back-and-forth with three lead changes and three ties. King's started the fourth quarter scoring with back-to-back goals to take a 5-4 lead with 8:24 remaining. Sophomore midfielder
Jake Higgins stepped on the field for the first time all game and promptly tied the game at 5-5 just 1:19 later. Colflesh then gave the Devils a 6-5 lead with 5:06 to play but King's tied it at 6-6 with 4:28 remaining. With under 0:10 to go in regulation, FDU forced a turnover and Reda got a shot off with 0:02 left that hit the post and sent the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, FDU won the face-off and held possession for the first 3:50. Koontz then got the ball and made his move, driving to his right and burying the game-winner while falling down to send the Devils to the tournament championship game.
Koontz and Colflesh finished the game with two goals apiece while junior midfielder
Charlie Yotcoski went 7-for-17 on faceoffs to go along with six ground balls. Sophomore goalkeeper
George Beck was outstanding all game, picking up the win by making 11 saves.
The Devils return to action on Thursday, May 3, 2012, in the Freedom Conference Tournament Finals at top-seeded Eastern beginning at 4 pm.
