Devils Clinch Tournament Berth With 7-5 Win Over DeSales

Box Score MADISON, NJ - With the game tied at 5-5 halfway through the fourth quarter, senior midfielder Paul Colflesh scored the final two goals of the contest to give the College at Florham Devils a 7-5 victory over DeSales in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.  The win gave FDU the third and final seed in the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament.

With the win, the Devils improved to 7-7 (3-2 Freedom) while the Bulldogs dropped to 6-9 (0-5 Freedom).

After a scoreless first quarter, DeSales got on the board just 0:14 into the second quarter.  Senior attack Brian Goodwine tied the game at 1-1 with 13:22 left in the half but the Bulldogs scored with 7:22 remaining to take a 2-1 lead into intermission.

FDU scored the first two goals of the third quarter to grab a 3-2 advantage when junior attack Cody McHugh and sophomore midfielder Jake Higgins found the back of the goal.  DeSales came back to tie the game at 3-3 with 10:58 left in the third but senior midfielder Adam Koontz and freshman attack Frank Reda scored back-to-back goals to put FDU on top by a score of 5-3 with 4:25 to go in the third.  DeSales once again came back, scoring two straight to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the fourth quarter.  With 7:17 to go in the game, Colflesh got the ball on the wing where he spun and fired in a goal as he was falling down to put the Devils up by one, 6-5.  Then with 0:19 remaining, Colflesh sealed the win on an empty net when the goalkeeper came out of the crease for a double team.

Junior attack Cory Weiss finished the game with two assists while sophomore goalkeeper George Beck picked up the win, making five saves.

The Devils return to action on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, in the Semifinals of the Freedom Conference Tournament at second-seeded King's beginning at 4 pm.
