Devils Come From Four Down To Beat USMMA In OT, 9-8

Box Score MADISON, NJ - Trailing 8-4 with 13:01 left in regulation, the College at Florham Devils scored the final five goals of the game to come from behind to beat USMMA in overtime by a score of 9-8 in their season opener on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Devils improved to 1-0 while the Mariners dropped to 0-2.

USMMA scored the first three goals of the game, all in the first quarter, to take a 3-0 lead into the second period.  FDU got on the board with 8:22 left in the half on a goal junior midfielder Cory Weiss but the Mariners got that goal back less than a minute later to take a 4-1 lead.  Senior midfielder Paul Colflesh scored two of the next three goals in the game to pull the Devils to within 5-3 at halftime.

The Mariners scored the first goal of the third quarter to grab a 6-3 advantage but sophomore midfielder Jake Higgins cut it to 6-4 with just 0:08 to go in the third.  USMMA came out to start the fourth quarter by scoring the first two goals to take an 8-4 lead with 13:01 to play.  That's when the Devils dug in though, as senior attack Brian Goodwine made it 8-5 less than a minute later before Higgins cut it to 8-6 with 10:35 remaining.  Senior midfielder Adam Koontz trimmed the score to 8-7 with 8:33 to play and Goodwine tied it at 8-8 with 5:37 on the clock.  Each team had possession with a under a minute left in regulation but neither could find the net and the contest went to overtime.  Spurred by a supportive crowd in the extra session, Higgins tallied the game-winner with 1:31 left to complete the comeback.

Higgins finished the game with three goals while Colflesh and Goodwine had two goals apiece.  Freshman goalkeeper Gerry Yotcoski made his first collegiate start and picked up the win by making nine saves in the cage.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at cross-town rival Drew beginning at 4 pm.
