Devils Fall To #16 St. Mary's, 73-64

Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - Junior guard Trevor Sykes tallied 18 points while freshman guard Nick Acito added 17 points but the College at Florham Devils were defeated by #16 St. Mary's (MD), 73-64, on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 2-6 while the Seahawks improved to 8-1.

FDU jumped out to a 10-5 lead with 14:35 left in the first half and the Devils held a 15-11 advantage with 9:17 to go after junior forward John Flete scored five straight points.  That's when the Seahawks made their move though, closing the half on a 24-9 run to take a 35-24 lead into intermission.

St. Mary's held a 12-point edge, 49-37, with 12:39 remaining but the Devils scored five in a row to pull to 49-42 with 10:35 left.  The Seahawks got those points right back however and went back up by 12, 54-42, with 8:39 to play.  It was a 13-point game, 59-46, with 7:01 left but the Devils made final push to get back in the game.  After a FDU free throw, Sykes drilled two three-pointers in a row to help the Devils close to 59-53 with 5:36 remaining.  St. Mary's knocked down four free throws sandwiched around a pair of freebies from junior forward Will Green to take a 63-55 advantage with 3:22 to go.  Sykes then knocked down another triple to make it 63-58 a little over a minute later.  FDU got a stop on defense but then missed a pair of free throws that would've made it a one possession game.  The Seahawks then went 6-of-6 from the line down the stretch to seal the 73-65 victory.

Green finished the game with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds while senior forward Derek Hall recorded six points and eight rebounds.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, December 29, 2012, against Regis in the Trinity (CT) Tournament beginning at 3 pm.
