MADISON, NJ - Junior attack
Adam Koontz broke a 7-7 tie with four-tenths of a second left in regulation capped a five-goal comeback as the fourth-seeded College at Florham Devils beat fifth-seeded Lycoming, 8-7, in the Quarterfinals of the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament on Monday evening.
With the win, the Devils improved to 11-6 and FDU will now move on to play second-seeded Messiah in the Semifinals. Lycoming dropped to 9-8 with the defeat.
The Warriors couldn't have asked for a better start, as they scored the first five goals of the game to take a 5-0 lead with 8:32 left in the second quarter. Koontz got the Devils on the board on the man-up when he converted a pass from junior midfielder
Paul Colflesh with 5:38 to go in the half. Koontz then made it 5-2 with 3:26 left but Lycoming scored the final goal of the half to take a 6-2 lead into intermission.
FDU slowly whittled their deficit away in the second half, starting with a goal by Colflesh to make it 6-3 with 8:06 left in the third quarter. Sophomore attack
Cody McHugh cut it to 6-4 with 5:45 to go in the third before senior attack
Drew Canfield made it 6-5 with 1:50 remaining. The Warriors tallied the first goal of the fourth quarter to grab a 7-5 advantage but Colflesh cut it to 7-6 with 9:14 left when he found the back of the net. The game stayed at 7-6 for the next seven minutes but Colflesh tied it at 7-7 after he converted a feed from sophomore attack
Cory Weiss with 2:39 left. Lycoming won the ensuing face-off but lost the ball when they committed a penalty, allowing the Devils to have the final crack at a win in regulation. FDU got three shots off, which were all wide, before Lycoming took a timeout with 0:45 remaining. Coming out of the timeout, it looked as though the Devils wouldn't be able to get a shot off until Koontz fired a last-second desperation shot from the top of the circle that somehow found its way into the back of the net to give FDU the unbelievable come-from-behind victory.
Colflesh finished the game with three goals and one assist while Koontz also had three goals. Freshman goalkeeper
Dino Vitale earned the win, making 14 saves. Vitale was phenominal in the second half, allowing just one goal while making six saves.
The Devils return to action on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at second-seeded Messiah in the Semifinals of the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament beginning at 7 pm.
