MADISON, NJ - In a battle of two of the top teams in the Middle Atlantic Conference, Widener held a 4-3 lead at halftime but used five third quarter goals to beat the College at Florham Devils, 12-5, on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Devils dropped to 4-3 (2-1 MAC) while the Pride improved to 4-2 (2-0 MAC).
It was back-and-forth action in the first half as the two squads traded goals. Widener started the scoring with 10:41 left in the first quarter but junior attack
Adam Koontz tied it at 1-1 for FDU. The Pride took a 2-1 lead with 1:16 left in the quarter but FDU tied it at 2-2 just 0:11 later when sophomore attack
Cody McHugh found the back of the net. Widener jumped ahead 3-2 with 1:24 gone by in the second quarter but FDU tied it at 3-3 with 11:03 remaining on another goal from Koontz. The Pride went ahead for good with 3:01 left in the half and took a 4-3 lead into intermission.
Widener came out hot to start the third quarter, as they scored five goals to take a 9-3 lead after three quarters of play. The Pride scored the first goal of the fourth quarter before freshman midfielder
Jake Higgins tallied for the Devils to make it 10-4. Widener notched two goals in a row to grab a 12-4 advantage but freshman midfielder
Nick Ardolino finished the scoring with 0:54 to go to make the final score 12-5.
Koontz finished the game with two goals while Higgins had a goal and an assist. The Devils had chances to score in the game, but they went 0-for-9 on extra man opportunities. Freshman goalkeeper
Dino Vitale suffered the loss, making eight saves.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at Messiah beginning at 1 pm.
