ANNVILLE, PA – Senior running back Ben Guiles rushed 14 times for 148 yards and two touchdowns to lead Lebanon Valley to a 51-7 victory over the College at Florham Devils in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-6 (0-4 MAC) while the Dutchmen improved to 5-1 (3-1 MAC).
Lebanon Valley received the opening kickoff and returned it to midfield. Two plays later, Guiles took a handoff for 37 yards down to the FDU two yard line before finishing the drive with a two-yard touchdown scamper to give LVC a 7-0 lead with 13:44 left in the first quarter. After three-and-outs by both teams, the Devils took over on their own 14 yard line and on the first play there was a fumbled exchange on the handoff that senior linebacker Macke Hall returned 11 yards for a touchdown to give LVC a 14-0 lead with 10:21 left in the first quarter. The Devils went three-and-out again on their next possession but LVC muffed the punt and junior safety Joe Mancini recovered giving FDU the ball on the Dutchmen 20 yard line. On first-and-goal from the nine, senior quarterback Ryan Cushman was intercepted in the end zone allowing LVC to take over. The Devils held on defense but stalled on their next series and after a 17-yard punt, LVC took over on the FDU 45 yard line. On the first play, Guiles took it in from 45 yards out to give the Dutchmen a 20-0 lead with 2:50 to go in the first quarter.
FDU opened up the second quarter by driving to the LVC 33 yard line where they faced a fourth-and-eight. Cushman tried to hit sophomore wide receiver Anthony Fruncillo in the end zone but the pass was broken up and the Dutchmen took over on downs. LVC drove the ball down to the FDU 16 yard line and elected to go for it on fourth-and-one that they picked up by inches. The Devil defense steadied from that point though and sophomore kicker Sean Fakete came on to boot a 31-yard field goal to give LVC a 23-0 lead with 7:26 left in the half. With 1:52 left in the half, LVC made it 30-0 on a five-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Colt Zarilla to senior wide receiver Tim Picerno that capped a 10-play, 72-yard drive. The Devils got on the board with only 0:08 left in the half as sophomore running back Mike Larson ripped off a 58-yard touchdown run to make the score 30-7 heading into halftime.
On their first series of the second half, LVC went 56 yards in six plays to take a 37-7 lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Zarilla to Picerno. With 5:54 to go in the third, the Dutchmen went up 44-7 on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Zarilla to sophomore wide receiver Jake Zeigler.
The Dutchmen took a 51-7 lead with 14:54 left in the fourth on a 15-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Leo Kyte to sophomore running back Evan Fink.
Larson had his finest game as a Devil, rushing 15 times for 112 yards and a score while Cushman finished 12-of-26 for 76 yards and an interception. Fruncillo caught four passes for 24 yards. On defense, senior linebacker Steve Hoverson finished with a game-high 10 tackles while junior linebacker Charlie Thomas and sophomore safety Dan Hicks each made eight stops.
The Devils return to action on Friday, October 21, 2011, at home against Albright beginning at 6:30 pm.
