MADISON, NJ - Despite four goals from senior attack
Kevin Shadiack (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), the second-seeded College at Florham Devils were knocked off by sixth-seeded Widener, 10-8, in the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship Game on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 11-6 while the Pride improved to 10-9 and capped an amazing run that saw them beat the top three seeds in the tournament all on the road.
Widener got on the board first with only 1:15 gone by in the game but the Devils responded by scoring the next two goals to grab a 2-1 lead with 10:16 left in the first quarter. Sophomore midfielder
Pat O'Brien (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and freshman attack
Seth Molek (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park River Forest) scored the two goals for FDU. The Pride tied things up at 2-2 on a man-up goal with 0:16 to go in the first before scoring the first two goals of the second quarter to grab a 4-2 advantage with 6:56 left in the half. That's when Shadiack started to make his mark, scoring back-to-back goals to even the game at 4-4 entering halftime.
The Pride began the third quarter by scoring two straight goals to take a 6-4 lead but FDU cut it to 6-5 when freshman midfielder
Brian Gill (Levittown, NY/East Meadow) converted a pass from sophomore attack
Adam Koontz (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson). Widener though, scored the final goal of the third quarter to take a 7-5 edge into the fourth and final quarter. Shadiack scored 1:15 into the fourth to close the gap to 7-6 but Widener tallied the next two to up their lead to 9-6 with 9:15 to go in the game. Koontz found the back of the net for FDU with eight minutes even remaining to make it 9-7 but Widener got that goal back just 0:18 later to take a 10-7 advantage. Shadiack notched his fourth goal of the game with 6:29 left to play to pull the Devils within two, 10-8, and FDU had a few chances down the stretch to put even more of a dent into the Widener lead but they just couldn't convert allowing the Pride to get the win and move on to the NCAA Tournament.
Koontz finished the game with a goal and an assist while senior goalkeeper
Alex Kajencki (Medfield, MA/Xaverian) made seven saves in the loss. Face-off specialist
Nick Fluharty of Widener was named the Most Valuable Player.
