Devils Drop MAC Opener To Manhattanville, 11-7

PURCHASE, NY - The College at Florham Devils dropped their Middle Atlantic Conference opener to Manhattanville, 11-7, on Tuesday evening.  The Valiants were also the only team to beat FDU in the conference last season.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 1-4 (0-1 MAC) while the Valiants improved to 2-3 (1-0 MAC).

Manhattanville scored the first two goals of the game before senior attack Kevin Shadiack (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) cut it to 2-1 with 10:55 left in the first quarter.  After the Valiants made it 3-1, Shadiack assisted on a goal by freshman midfielder Mike Sheehan (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph's Metuchen) to make it 3-2 with 0:21 to go in the quarter.  The Valiants notched the first two goals of the second quarter to jump out to a 5-2 advantage but FDU got back-to-back goals from freshman attack Brian Gill (Levittown, NY/East Meadow) and Shadiack, both assisted by junior attack Drew Canfield (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), to make it 5-4 with 3:29 remaining in the first half.  The Valiants got the last goal of the half to take a 6-4 lead into intermission.

After Shadiack scored off a feed from sophomore attack Adam Koontz (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson) to start the third quarter, Manhattanville tallied two straight to take an 8-5 lead with 8:12 left in the third.  Sheehan scored again just a minute later to pull the Devils to within 8-6 and the third quarter ran out with the score staying that way.  The Valiants put the game away by beginning the fourth quarter with three consecutive goals to take an 11-6 advantage with 8:05 to play.  Shadiack chipped in a late goal for FDU but the damage had already been done.

Shadiack finished the game with four goals and an assist while Sheehan added two goals.  Senior goalkeeper Alex Kajencki (Medfield, MA/Xaverian) suffered the loss, making seven saves in goal.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, March 27, 2010, with their home opener against DeSales beginning at 1 pm.
