Devils Drop Season Finale To Lycoming, 17-10

MADISON, NJ - Sophomore running back Parker Showers rushed 17 times for 104 yards and a touchdown while senior running back Josh Kleinfelter carried 14 times for 95 yards to lead Lycoming to a 17-10 victory over the College at Florham Devils in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils finished the season with a record of 3-7 (0-7 MAC) while the Warriors improved to 6-4 (4-3 MAC).

FDU got the ball first to begin the game and after a 31-yard kickoff return by senior running back Bayshawn Wells, the Devils drove 46 yards in 10 plays to take a 3-0 lead on a 24-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Travis Mullen.  The big plays of the drive were a 14-yard pass from senior quarterback Matt Jeffers to sophomore wide receiver Jon Bennett, a 13-yard pass from Jeffers to sophomore wide receiver Doug Van Orden and a 13-yard run by senior running back Brendon Griffin.  Lycoming responded immediately though, going 58 yards in four plays capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Zach Klinger to senior tight end Mike Reese to grab a 7-3 lead with 7:52 left in the first quarter.

Neither offense got much going until Lycoming started their second drive of the second quarter.  Beginning at their own 24 yard line, the Warriors drove 76 yards in six plays to take a 14-3 lead on a 27-yard touchdown run by Showers with 10:27 left in the first half.  FDU got a little something going on their last possession of the half, moving to the Lycoming 43 yard line but Jeffers was intercepted at the Lyco 10, ending the threat.

Lycoming started with the ball in the second half and after getting one first down, the Warriors had to punt.  The Devils began their series on their own 24 yard line but a 15-yard pass from Jeffers to sophomore tight end Dan Hamilton moved the ball out to the 43.  Two plays later, Jeffers scrambled for a 15-yard gain before Wells carried for 21 yards to the Lycoming 26 yard line.  On the next play, Jeffers was picked off at the Warrior four to seemingly end the scoring opportunity.  On Lycoming's first play though, Klinger fumbled the snap and senior linebacker Ian Moore jumped on the ball to put FDU back in business at the Lyco four yard line.  The Devils then cut the Warrior lead to 14-10 on the next play when Griffin took it in from four yards out with 8:45 left in the third quarter.

With 5:44 left in the game, Lycoming got the ball on the FDU 41 yard line and went 21 yards in six plays to take a 17-10 lead on a 37-yard field goal by senior kicker TJ Chiarolanza with 2:56 to go.  FDU got the ball for the last time in the game, with a chance to tie, at their own 44 after a 31-yard kick return by Wells.  Jeffers then completed five passes for 23 yards to go along with a pass interference penalty on Lycoming to put the ball at the Lycoming 21 yard line with 1:24 remaining.  On second-and-eight from the 21, Jeffers hit senior wide receiver Andrew Scamporino in the corner of the end zone for what looked like the potential game-tying score but the referees ruled that Scamporino didn't get a foot down and it was an incomplete pass.  FDU then faltered on their next two plays and turned the ball over on downs to Lycoming, who then took a knee and ran out the clock.

Jeffers finished the game 16-of-37 for 160 yards and two interceptions while Wells ran nine times for 56 yards.  Van Orden had six grabs for 48 yards while Scamporino, Bennett, junior wide receiver Tim Grey, and junior tight end Mike Winters each had two catches.  On defense, junior defensive tackle Gilbert Taylor tied for a game-high with nine tackles while senior safety Gino Abbate added seven stops.  Junior outside linebacker Steve Hoverson finished with six tackles, two for loss, and a sack while senior defensive end George Gibson had six tackles, one for loss.
