Special Teams Dooms Devils In 35-20 Loss To Widener

CHESTER, PA - Freshman punt returner Laquan Robinson (Chester, PA/Chester) returned punts of 63 and 62 yards for touchdowns to lead Widener to a 35-20 win over the College at Florham Devils in the Middle Atlantic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 3-1 (0-1 MAC) while the Pride improved to 2-2 (1-0 MAC).  The loss spoiled FDU's bid for their first 4-0 start since 1988.

Widener started the game with the ball and moved into FDU territory before the Devils forced a punt.  Starting at their own 20 yard line, FDU was forced into a three-and-out and had to punt when Robinson returned the punt 63 yards for a touchdown to put Widener up, 7-0, with 10:29 left in the first quarter.  FDU responded with a methodical 10-play 74 yard drive that took 5:25 off the clock and resulted in a five-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Matt Jeffers (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) to senior tight end Beau Reed (Ocean, NJ/Rumson) that tied the game at 7-7 with 5:04 left in the first quarter.  The Devils faced only one third down on the whole drive and Jeffers hit sophomore wide receiver Jon Bennett (Howell, NJ/Freehold Twp.) for 11 yards on third-and-four.

The Devils pushed the ball into Widener territory to begin the second quarter but had to punt, however senior punter John Hancock (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) nailed a beauty and pinned the Pride on the three yard line with 14:44 to go before halftime.  FDU once again forced a three-and-out and started with great field position after a shanked punt gave the Devils the ball on the Widener 38 yard line.  After gaining only a yard, FDU had to punt it back to Widener and junior cornerback Eric Brown (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) downed Hancock's punt on the two.  The Pride couldn't get anything going on offense and after a 29-yard punt, a 12-yard return and a five-yard penalty; the Devils began the series on the Widener 15 yard line.  The Devils lost two yards on the drive and sophomore kicker Travis Mullen (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake) came on to nail a 34-yard field goal to give FDU a 10-7 lead with 9:11 left in the second quarter.  The FDU defense forced another three-and-out and the offense took over on their own 35 yard line, marching down to the Widener 25 yard line where they faced a fourth-and-seven with 2:02 left in the half.  FDU opted to try a 42-yard field goal and Mullen drilled it to give the Devils a 13-7 advantage.  The kick was Mullen's career-long made field goal.  The Pride started their next possession with promising field position at their own 41, but once again the Devil defense made them go three-and-out.  A roughing the kicker penalty though, gave Widener a first down at the FDU 49 with 0:25 remaining.  On the last play of the first half, senior corner Matt Porricelli (Howell, NJ/Freehold Twp.) picked off a pass at the FDU 34 and returned it 43 yards but was taken down by a shoe string tackle right as time ran out preventing FDU from adding another score.

FDU began the second half with great field position after senior running back Bayshawn Wells (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) returned the kick out to the Devils 40 yard line.  A 20-yard pass from Jeffers to Wells on first down moved the ball to the Pride 40 and on third-and-eight from the 38; Jeffers hit Bennett on a wide receiver screen for 10 yards and a first down to the 28.  On third-and-nine from the 27, Jeffers was intercepted halting another scoring opportunity.  With a change in offensive scheme and at quarterback, Widener drove the ball to the FDU 29 yard line where they faced third-and-five.  A four-yard gain made it fourth-and-one at the 25 that the Pride converted on a fullback dive.  Six plays later, junior fullback Brendan Curran (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) punched it in from a yard out to put Widener on top, 14-13, with 5:59 left in the third quarter.  The Devils went three-and-out on the ensuing series but a roughing the kicker penalty on the punt gave FDU a first down at the Widener 46 yard line.  A pass interference penalty on Widener on third-and-nine gave FDU another first down, this time at the Pride 41 yard line.  The Devils couldn't go any further though, and punted it down to the Widener 13 yard line with 1:56 left in the third quarter.  Widener was able to move it out to their 40 yard line and flipped the field position with a punt down to the FDU 24 yard line on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The Pride came up with a three-and-out to get the ball back and Robinson once again returned the punt for a touchdown, this time a 62-yard return that saw him break multiple tackles to give Widener a 21-13 lead with 13:30 left in the game.  Neither offense could get anything started until Widener took over on the FDU 27 yard line with 4:02 to go after a shanked punt.  On the first play of the drive, Widener sophomore quarterback Chris Haupt (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) hit junior wide receiver Cedrick Clayton (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) for a 27-yard touchdown pass to give the Pride a 28-13 lead.  The Devils marched right back down the field to cut the deficit to 28-20 on a five-yard touchdown pass from Jeffers to junior wide receiver Tim Grey (Ft. Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) with 3:10 remaining.  FDU chose to kick the ball deep and after two plays, Widener moved the ball 47 yards to the FDU 23 yard line.  On the next play, senior running back Adam Smith (Littlestown, PA/East Stroudsburg) sealed the win with a 23-yard touchdown run to make it 35-20 with 2:01 left.

Jeffers finished the game 18-of-38 for 201 yards to go along with two touchdowns and two interceptions.  Senior wide receiver Andrew Scamporino (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) had five catches for 95 yards while Bennett finished with four catches for 45 yards.  Wells was the leading rusher with 12 carries for 33 yards.  Junior linebacker Steve Hoverson (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North) made a game-high nine tackles, three for loss, to go along with a sack.  Porricelli finished with a seven tackles and a pick while senior defensive end Anthony DelConte (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) and junior defensive tackle Gilbert Taylor (Salem, NJ/Salem) each recorded a sack.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at home for Homecoming against Delaware Valley beginning at 1 pm.
