LVC Overcomes 21-7 Halftime Deficit To Beat FDU, 33-21

ANNVILLE, PA - Junior running back Ben Guiles (Columbia, PA/Columbia)  scored four second half touchdowns to help Lebanon Valley turn a 21-7 halftime deficit into a 33-21 win over the College at Florham Devils in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 3-3 (0-3 MAC) while the Dutchmen improved to 2-4 (1-2 MAC).

Lebanon Valley won the coin toss and got the ball first, moving it to midfield before sophomore safety Joe Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) intercepted senior quarterback Caleb Fick (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown to give FDU a 7-0 lead with 12:18 left in the first quarter.  The Dutchmen got the ball back and drove to the FDU 36 yard line where they faced a fourth-and-one that the Devil defense stuffed to force a turnover on downs.  On second-and-15 from their own 47, senior quarterback Matt Jeffers (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) hit senior tight end Beau Reed (Ocean, NJ/Rumson) down to the two yard line where a play later, senior offensive tackle James Sullivano (Howell, NJ/Howell) lined up at fullback and plowed in to give the Devils a 14-0 lead with 5:54 left in the first quarter.  The Devils got the ball back in their own territory late in the quarter but Jeffers was picked off at the FDU 37 yard line setting up the Dutchmen with plus field position.  The FDU defense forced another fourth-and-one, this time from the 29 yard line, and Lebanon Valley picked up four yards to keep their drive alive.  Seven plays later, Fick hit senior tight end Brendan Riley (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic) for a three-yard touchdown pass to cut the FDU lead to 14-7 with 11:52 left in the second quarter.

Neither team got much going after that until FDU took over on their own 41 with 6:53 to go in the half.  Jeffers hit sophomore wide receiver Doug Van Orden (Madison, NJ/Madison) for 15 yards to the LVC 44 before connecting with Van Orden again on third-and-five down to the 24 yard line.  Jeffers then completed to senior wide receiver Andrew Scamporino (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) for 10 yards to the 14.  On the next play, senior running back Brendon Griffin (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) ran it in from 14 yards out to give the Devils a 21-7 advantage with 3:27 remaining in the half.  Lebanon Valley responded by driving the ball down to the FDU five yard line where they faced a fourth-and-three with 1:01 to go.  The Dutchmen chose to go for it and the Devil defense stood tall as Mancini broke up a play-action pass to keep the score 21-7 heading into the locker rooms.

The Dutchmen tried a squib kick to begin the second half but junior tight end Mike Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) fielded the ball at the FDU 38 and returned it to the LVC 40 to set FDU up with fantastic field position.  The Devils went backwards though and punted down to the Dutchmen 16 yard line.  Lebanon Valley pushed it out to their own 39 and faced a fourth-and-one that they chose to go for and converted on a great second effort by Guiles.  On the next play, Fick hit senior wide receiver Ed Tobin (Lititz, PA/Warwick) for 34 yards down to the FDU 26 yard line.  The Dutchmen faced another fourth-and-one, this time from the FDU seven, but Fick's pass to the end zone was incomplete allowing the Devils to take over.  LVC forced a three-and-out and returned the FDU punt to the Devils 27 yard line, setting up great field position.  Facing a fourth-and-eight, Fick's pass was incomplete forcing a turnover on downs.  On the second play of FDU's next series, Jeffers was picked off by senior safety Jur'ey Fowlkes (Deptford, NJ/Deptford Twp.), who returned it to the FDU three yard line.  Two plays later, Guiles took it in from four yards out to help LVC pull to within 21-14 with 2:11 left in the third quarter.

After a three-and-out by FDU, Lebanon Valley drove down to the FDU nine yard line and faced a fourth-and-five to begin the fourth quarter.  A false start by LVC made it fourth-and-10 from the 14 but senior defensive end Anthony DelConte (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) came up with a huge sack to give the Devils the ball back on their own 26 yard line.  On second down, Jeffers was intercepted by senior linebacker Jason Gigous (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) setting the Dutchmen up on the FDU 25 yard line.  Seven plays later, Lebanon Valley cut the deficit to 21-20 with 10:11 left on a one-yard touchdown run by Guiles.  The extra point though, hit the post allowing the Devils to keep the lead.  The Dutchmen defense forced another three-and-out on the next series and LVC got the ball back on the FDU 41 yard line.  Lebanon Valley moved to the FDU 24 and faced a fourth-and-eight but Fick's pass was dropped in the end zone and the Devils escaped unscathed once more.  The FDU offense continued its struggles though, going three-and-out and punting the ball to the LVC 43 yard line with 6:13 to go.  Lebanon Valley kept their strong second half going by churning up more yards and clock, driving down to the FDU one before Guiles plunged in to make it 26-21 with 4:10 remaining.  The two-point conversion pass was incomplete, keeping the score at 26-21.  The Devils got the ball back at their own 38 but faced a fourth-and-eight at the 40 with 3:16 to play.  Jeffers completed a pass to Griffin out of the backfield but it went nowhere and LVC took over on downs.  Guiles put the game on ice for Lebanon Valley with an eight-yard touchdown run to make it 33-21 with 1:37 left.

Jeffers finished the game 16-of-32 for 151 yards and three interceptions while Griffin carried eight times for 30 yards and a score.  Van Orden caught five passes for 51 yards.  Until the last drive of the game, FDU had nine total yards of offense and no first downs in the second half.  On defense, sophomore linebacker Charles Thomas (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands Regional) had a game-high 12 tackles while junior linebacker Steve Hoverson (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North) added 11 tackles.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at home against Wilkes beginning at 1 pm.
