WASHINGTON, DC - The College at Florham Devils held a 69-68 lead in the final half minute of regulation but Regis College got a layup with 0:22 to go to give them a 70-69 win over FDU in the First Round of the Catholic Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-8.
Regis jumped out to a 10-2 lead at the 14:31 mark of the first half but the Devils responded with a 20-8 run over the next twelve minutes to take a 22-18 advantage with 2:33 to go. Sophomore guard
Bobby Faiges (Bayville, NJ/Lakewood Prep) had eight points in the run for FDU while sophomore guard
Adam Katz (Wharton, NJ/Morris Hills) added six points. Regis came right back to take a 27-24 lead but sophomore guard
Martin Johnson (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) nailed a three-pointer with 0:02 left to tie the game at 27-27 heading into halftime.
FDU opened up a six-point lead, 41-35, with 6:32 gone by in the second half but Regis took a 45-42 lead three minutes later. The Devils responded with a 9-0 to grab a 51-45 advantage thanks to five points from Katz. Regis cut it to one, 55-54, with 6:29 remaining but the Devils quickly ripped off an 11-4 run to take a 66-58 lead with 3:48 to go. FDU had a 69-64 edge with 2:12 to play but that was the last time they would score as Regis chipped away at the lead, finally taking a lead of their own on the layup with 0:22 left. The Devils could not get a shot off to potentially win the game, allowing Regis to escape with the win.
Katz finished with a game-high 31 points to go along with seven rebounds while Faiges added 11 points, six boards and five assists.
The Devils return to action on Sunday, January 3, 2010, against Lancaster Bible in the Consolation Game of the Catholic Tournament beginning at 2 pm.
