Devils End Season With 28-21 Loss To Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - Junior running back Josh Kleinfelter (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) carried 25 times for 133 yards while senior running back Mark Rosa (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) rushed 20 times for 67 yards and two touchdowns to lead Lycoming to a 28-21 season-ending win over the College at Florham Devils on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils end their season with a record of 2-8 (1-6 MAC) while the Warriors finished 4-6 (3-4 MAC).

The Devils got the ball to begin the game and drove the ball down to the Lycoming 33 yard line where they faced a third-and-nine.  Junior quarterback Matt Jeffers (Burlington, NJ/Burlington) connected with senior wide receiver Lou Pietrangelo (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) for a 14-yard gain and a first down at the 19 yard line.  The Devils faced another third-and-nine, this time at the 18 yard line, and again converted when Jeffers found senior wide receiver Kyle Bukowiec (Howell, NJ/Howell) for 10 yards down to the eight yard line.  On third-and-goal from the 10, Jeffers threw a swing pass to junior running back Bayshawn Wells (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) who made a few moves and scampered into the end zone to give the Devils a 7-0 lead with 7:42 left in the first quarter.  Lycoming returned the ensuing kickoff 61 yards though, setting them up on the FDU 16 yard line.  The Warriors lost two yards on the drive and attempted a 35-yard field goal that went wide right.

FDU forced a Lycoming three-and-out deep in Warrior territory and a shanked punt gave the Devils the ball on the Lycoming 37 yard line with 0:14 gone by in the second quarter.  The Devils faced third-and-four from the 19 yard line and Jeffers fired a strike for a first down to junior tight end Beau Reed (Ocean, NJ/Rumson) at the Warriors 14.  On the very next play, Jeffers was intercepted by junior defensive back Chuck Bellitto (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) allowing Lycoming to escape the jam.  The Warriors were able to move the ball all the way down inside the FDU 10 yard line where they had a first-and-goal but a series of penalties moved the ball back to the 29 yard line where on third-and-goal, senior quarterback Colin Dwyer (Dalton, PA/Lackawanna Trail) found sophomore wide receiver Ryan Wagaman (Biglerville, PA/Biglerville) in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown to tie the score at 7-7 with 7:07 left in the first half.

After moving into Lycoming territory on their next series, Jeffers was picked off by sophomore defensive back Ray Bierbach (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) who returned it to the Devils 38 yard line.  The Warriors made it 14-7 on a five-yard touchdown run by Rosa with 1:31 remaining in the half.  FDU threatened late in the half, moving to the Lycoming 40 yard line, but had to punt and Lycoming went into the locker room with their 14-7 lead still intact.

Lycoming went three-and-out to start the second half and the Devils got the ball and drove it all the way down the field, before stalling at the Lycoming 11 yard line.  Freshman kicker Travis Mullen (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake) came on to attempt a 28-yard field goal but it went wide left, allowing the Warriors to escape again.  The Devil defense forced another three-and-out, getting the offense the ball back on the Lycoming 43 yard line.  A 27-yard pass from Jeffers to junior wide receiver Andrew Scamporino (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) moved the ball down to the 17 yard line and on the next play, the pair connected again for a 17-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 14-14 with 3:07 left in the third quarter.  On their ensuing series, the Warriors pushed the ball to the FDU 24 yard line and faced a fourth-and-one that they converted for a new set of downs.  Two plays later, Dwyer hit junior wide receiver Josh Dixon (Fleetville, PA/Lackawanna Trail) for a three-yard touchdown to put the Warriors up 21-14 with 12:42 left in the game.

A series of penalties had Lycoming kicking off from their own 10 yard line and the Devils began their next drive near midfield.  On third-and-five, Jeffers was sacked for a 15 yard loss and FDU had to punt from their 42 yard line.  The Warriors faced a third-and-11 on their 22 yard line but a pass interference penalty on the Devils gave Lycoming a first down and some breathing room.  Seven straight runs moved the ball down to the FDU 17 yard line where the Warriors faced a fourth-and-one that they converted by the nose of the football.  Five plays, and runs, later, Rosa took it in from two yards out to give the Warriors a 28-14 lead with 2:40 to go in the game.  Wells returned the kickoff to midfield, setting up the Devils for one final push.  Jeffers found Reed for a 26-yard gain on fourth-and-10, then Pietrangelo for a 15-yard pickup on fourth-and-two before tossing a four-yard touchdown to Scamporino with 1:08 left to cut the deficit to 28-21.  FDU then lined up for an onsides kick but the Warriors recovered and ran out the clock to earn the win.

Jeffers finished the game 24-of-40 for 279 yards to go along with three touchdowns and two interceptions.  Scamporino had six catches for 73 yards and two scores, Pietrangelo had six grabs for 59 yards and Bukowiec made six receptions for 52 yards.  Sophomore linebacker Steve Hoverson (Middletown, NJ/Iona) had a game-high 11 tackles while sophomore linebacker Ryan Daly (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) finished with 10 tackles.  Senior safeties Jason Glezman (Lincroft, NJ/Mater Dei) and Dan Labrutto (Brick, NJ/Brick) had seven and five tackles, respectively, while senior defensive end James Gartland (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) forced and recovered a fumble.
