Box Score 2 MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham baseball team limited the King's College Monarchs to just two runs in two games and completed the three-game season sweep on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils claimed game one 6-1 before breaking a 1-1 tie late in game two to earn the win.
With the win, the Devils improve to 20-12 overall and 15-6 in Freedom Conference play, while the loss drops the Monarchs to 8-19 and 5-16 in conference. The Devils secured the third seed in next weekend's Freedom Conference Tournament and will take on Misericordia University.
Game OneChris Roberts (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) took the mound for the Devils in game one and was outstanding. On senior day, the senior right-hander tossed a complete game, allowed three hits and one run while striking out five to improve to 6-2 on the season.
In the bottom of the first, fellow senior
Brandan Adams (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) laced a double to plate the Devils first run of the ball game. FDU-Florham catcher
Kevin Sinclair (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) knocked in a run with a single down the right field line and the Devils led 2-0 through three innings.
FDU-Florham added one run in the fourth and three runs in the sixth, which proved to be more than enough support for Roberts. Adams finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while senior right fielder
Kyle Herron (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) also picked up two hits and an RBI in the win.
Game TwoJunior left-hander
Joe Hofmann (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) got the ball in game two and was equally impressive. Hofmann weathered rainy conditions, including a 20-minute rain delay, and went 6.1 innings, scattered six hits, allowed one run and struck out nine to earn his second win of the season.
With the game knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore outfielder
James Dertouzos (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) smacked a double to left center field. After a single by
Alex Geramita (Old Tappan, N.J./Don Bosco), Herron plated Dertouzos with a shot to right, which proved to be the game-winning run.
The Monarchs threatened in the seventh but junior closer
Bobby Bray (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) came on to wrap things up and earn his fifth save of the season.
In the win, junior
Frankie Tassielli (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) and senior
Frank LaGuarina (Somerset, N.J./Immaculata) eached totaled two hits.
Next up for the Devils:FDU-Florham heads to Staten Island, N.Y. on Tuesday, April 29
th to take on College of Staten Island, with first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
